The creak of the picket gate was their only warning.
James's head shot up and his gaze met Lily's.
"I'll check the door. Maybe it was the wind."
They both knew they had left the gate locked but Lily said nothing as James got to his feet. Harry babbled, waving his arms in a baby's approximation of farewell. James went to the door and looked through the glass.
