Ranpo was honestly planning to sleep through the entire show.
He wasn’t even going to go in the first place, but Atsushi had promised to buy him whatever he wanted from the bakery near the school if Ranpo went with him. Atsushi heard from his classmates that Akutagawa, his “mortal enemy,” had painted the sets for the show, and Atsushi wanted to make fun of them. He couldn’t do that without seeing the sets, obviously, so he had begged Ranpo to go with him.
Thus Ranpo, the ever magnanimous senior he was, agreed to go with Atsushi (but only after it was established that he could get anything from the bakery).

Summary
He has never experienced a relationship outside of friendship. He values his friendships more than any fantastical relationship books and songs conjure up in the minds of hormone-infested teenagers. Ranpo has never been the type of person to fall for such nonsense. He is convinced no soul alive or around could ever match up to his wits and intellect.
Ranpo is smart (an understatement), so he didn’t see this fact changing. Yet he keeps making this…small mistake, as he sees it.
... He is confused as to why this one guy in a few of his classes continues to make him trip over himself.

Your left eye turns the same color as your soulmate's right eye when you meet them, but the pupil is different from the normal black, (in most cases, at least) and instead had a color to show how they feel towards you. Pink for love, grey for strangers, a suffocating black for hate.
If they were confused or felt a lot, the colors might form an ombre.Ranpo's eyes were startling when they were open, the green of the right one caught light so easily, so gleaming and bright, that you could mistake them for real emeralds.
His left was a grey that almost seemed suffocating, but still was warm, the pupil a purple to black ombre, screaming of obsession and hatred.
