    Summary

The best way to describe this work, I think, is as a novelization of the television series told from Ilya Rozanov's point of view. What happens in the series will happen, more or less, in this work.

Please note, I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels and this is a written story, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. That means that where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.

This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Ilya's point of view.

    Summary

After I retold the television show Heated Rivalry from the point of view of Ilya Rozanov, my brain decided I needed to write the exact same thing, but from the point of view of Shane Hollander, so I not only did I need to match the show, but also my own prior work. WHEE!

So that's what this is: a novelization of the television show that is ALSO a companion piece to Bad Thing.

I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. One of my all time favorite Hollanov stories. Immaculate from beginning to end. If you're wondering about the novelization of the show aspect specifically, yes it's worth it. Yes it's worth it 🔥

    Summary

Yuna getting stuck in an elevator with Ilya for two hours doesn't change everything... but it changes some things. Like Yuna getting to be on a first-name basis with Ilya a full year before her son is.

(Part 2 (the smutty part) is not actually essential reading if you are not in the mood for smut!)

One of my all time favorite canon lateral au's

Both Shane's autistic transition anxiety and difficulty changing course and his bamf decisive brilliant loyal jock natures are here

    Maybe my favorite Shane Characterization

    Nobody is being infantalized

The parts that are supposed to be emotionally suspenseful are nail biting, the comedy is hilarious, and the emotional bits are gorgeous

Really fantastic writing, so worth reading the whole series

    Summary

Ilya Rozanov, a professional dom, lives in the space between. Between shifts, between countries, between versions of himself. Control is what keeps things from falling apart. Control, and distance.

Shane Hollander lives the life that might have been his. He spends his NLH career closing distance, closing gaps, moving toward things instead of away from them.

When a chance meeting at the animal shelter crosses their paths, something unexpected carries between them, like a call, waiting to be answered.

*This work is a remix/ heavily inspired by Wolfbird (OpalApparition), including people and locations. In my mind, a “what could have happened if they met in a different way and made different choices.” It’s sweet, has (mostly/eventual) soft landings, and features many puppies who absolutely did not ask to be a part of this, and one very dramatic chiweenie who did.

Thank you to OpalApparition for the encouragement to write what I love.

    Bookmarker's Notes

    Author knows dogs
Author knows power exchange at its most emotionally intimate is about trust
Author never shames sex workers or poor people
Author writes both these adult professional men like they're adult professional men. Perfection.
    Characterization is excellent
The writing is gorgeous, the sort of emotionally resonant prose that crawls into your chest and makes a home there

I'm kinda stingy about my bookmarks and only bookmark things if I know I would be bummed out if I lost a fic and couldn't recommend this specific one as an ambassador to the entire fandom/ship

That's just how my adorable audhd self utilizes bookmarks, like a dragon with a very particular horde

So if you're considering reading this, this is writing worth reading, and if you're the author shuffling through your bookmarks, this is writing worth reading, thank you for writing it :)

I know I probably should have made half of this a comment but the bookmarks on my own fic stress me out sometimes so maybe this will be useful or give someone a smile
