Summary
How To Train your Dragon is history, so there are no dragons in the magical world.
A few years after the departure of the dragons, a ship approached New Berk.
It comes to the light that the visitors are wizards (NOT Merlin) and that not all dragons are in the Hidden World. The same idea as the Vikings, Wingmaidens and Defenders of the Wing had a magical community of apostates, which does not want to have anything to do with other wizards.
They decide to unite their communities, and the wizards create a magical barrier, first around the island and over time around the entire Barbaric Archipelago.A few centuries, maybe a millennium later, young dragon rider save a life of a young wizard in in the Highlands of Scotland.

Maelle would see how important it was to fight the Paintress... so she wouldn't have any more attachments to this damn world.
Verso had been up on the ledge, next to his sister. Had been waiting in the shadows for his father to kill this man... Gustave.
And then he'd suddenly had found himself down there by the cliff parrying the blow, which was supposed to end Gustave's life.---
Verso stops his father from dealing the killing blow and with this his troubles only get started!

Summary
He tells himself, as he huddles over the campfire while the others sleep and tries to keep the pain inside, that it's for the best. Gustave was always already gone. Verso will end the Canvas and, if he doesn't, Aline will die and Renoir will destroy the Canvas anyway. The end, whatever form it takes, is close and Verso's lived with worse guilt for longer.
Or: Verso sacrifices Gustave, and his bond, to end everything and free his family. Only nothing (because he's Verso) goes as planned. Maelle wins, Gustave comes back, and so do the bleeding remnants of something that barely existed.
