Such thoughts turn him back to the Shire. For it is a Shire that loves him little which he is stepping forward to save. They may all be burning, but they’d have little problem immolating him if they thought it would secure their own salvation. And yet, still, he doesn’t turn away.

If they can keep it simple, distant, professional, then maybe nobody’ll clock them.
