Summary
"I will pay."
Heat prickled across Shane's face at the deep, volcanic tone of Rozanov's voice. The meaning of the offer was vague, but something in the way the words drew from Rozanov's firm, stiff-lipped mouth struck Shane as unmistakable.
"To be with you tonight."
Shane blustered out an indignant laugh, the flames of rapid flush licking higher on her cheeks. "Are you fucking with me right now? Rozanov, I'm not—," Shane pitched her voice lower, which meant she had to press her mouth nearly against Rozanov's ear to be heard. "I'm not a call girl!"
Jerking back on a gruff laugh, Ilya postured her. "I know that. But everyone has their price."
Ilya Rozanov, internationally-renowned singles tennis star, propositions Shane Hollander, sports medicine consultant for the Montreal Voyageurs and local nobody, in a nightclub surrounded by people. What's the worst that could happen? It's not as if Shane is going to say yes... is she?

Summary
Ilya is not going to do anything. He knows this. He's also standing very still.
He thinks about his mother's arm, hanging over the side of the bed. He was twelve. He'd thought she was sleeping.
He closes the cabinet.
The face in the mirror is someone he recognizes in the way you recognize a city you lived in as a child: the basic geography is familiar, but you can't find anything you're looking for.
-
Or: A closer look at Ilya’s first year in Ottawa, set against his first in Boston—featuring a long-lost answering machine he claimed he’d never listen to, the family inevitably left behind when you move, and the mostly self-imposed pressure of loving a man as large and looming as the great Shane Hollander.
