He has never argued with a punishment, not since he was a toddler, if then. Surely she’ll listen, surely she’ll see this is too harsh, that he wouldn’t be disrespecting her like this if he was simply sulking over not getting his way. He needs that food, needs to be able to eat enough if he wants to be Robin.
He’s been hungry before, but back then, it never mattered if he was a little weak or dizzy. It never risked his life or the life of his partner when he was a kid.
She turns, sighing softly and pursing her lips. She reaches out to pat his cheek, and for a moment his heart soars hopefully, and he barely restrains himself from leaning into the rare bit of contact and soaking up his mother’s touch. “Oh, Timothy,” she tuts. “This is for the best. And honestly, I think it’s wise for you to cut down a bit on the snacks. I’d hate to have to listen to anyone tittering at the next gala that you’re getting chubby.”
And without another backwards glance, she turns and heads upstairs, leaving Tim alone and frozen at the bottom of the steps.

Tim deserves to be punished. He needs to be. It’s the only way to fix him. His Mommy is smart, she’d know how to fix it. She’d know exactly how much to hurt him to make it all better.
So he does what she would do. He pulls himself away from the warmth of the blankets, hating the way the movement stings against his renewed rash. It never really goes away, with how prevalent this particular problem is. Nothing Tim does prevents the nightmares. Mrs. Mac had to put a plastic sheet on his bed to keep him from ruining the mattress.
He crawls over the border of pillows, barely keeping from toppling to the floor. He’d deserve it, if he fell, but that’s too loud. He can’t dare wake them. He already has a whole list of mistakes he ought to be disciplined for, he doesn’t need awakening them early to be added. Sometimes Daddy is gentler after a good night’s sleep. Maybe Mr. Wayne and his sons will be too.

“I don’t want you handling my things, Drake,” Damian sneers, but the tone is off. It’s like he’s playing it up rather than invoking any real sort of disdain. “I am not going to give you one of my knives unless there’s an adequate reason. Tell me. Is there someone chasing you? Are we on alert? The gala disbanded two hours early, and no one will explain why. Richard threw me and Titus outside earlier and no one will explain why. Father escorted Senator Jenkins out, looking beaten half to death, and no one will explain why. I know you set off your distress beacon, and no one will explain why. What is going on? Why do you need a knife?”

Summary
For a moment, Tim wonders why he gives these people any sort of time, because the only two people who would want him to be polite are six feet under and indefinitely comatose in the hospital. And then he thinks of Mrs. Roberts and imagines her telling him to be polite. The very thought digs into his very soul, aching and raw. Even at his own mother’s funeral, he craves for someone else to fill the void in his heart.
