Summary
There’s a silence when Natasha turns back around, the two of them laying on their sides and staring at each other. They have done this hundreds of times before; perhaps that’s why it feels so strange now. So much time has passed, so many things have changed, but they are still here. Their childhood is so far away now, an entire lifetime ago, but they still made it back to each other.
It is bittersweet, Yelena thinks, but perhaps more sweet than bitter. Yelena will never be able to return to the time where the scariest thing in her life was the boogeyman who her big sister would protect her from. Time has passed, and Yelena has grown into the monster under the bed; her big sister is still here, though. Her big sister still protects her.
The first few months Yelena was in the Red Room, all she wanted was this. She doesn’t think she ever grew out of the need for her big sister, despite the years that passed. Now she has her big sister back, and she doesn’t want to let go.
