If he just kept pushing forward the pain wouldn't come, it could be kept at bay for a time even though he knew he couldn't flee it, snug around his throat.
(I don't want to do this.)
And if he sharpened his mind to some kind of razor-edged point, for a few seconds here or there, he'd entirely forget. Till he'd be perching in the trees, or staring through the window, or searching with that tightness already binding up his ribcage, and he'd consider if just collapsing here and now might be a kinder fate. Or to give himself up, he could do that too, but then the pain would come like a far-off rainstorm. He hadn't felt the droplets yet, but the echos of rumbling thunder and the flashes of lightning gave him warning enough.

Summary
This is a post episode 8 look at Cait and Vi and how they navigate their relationships while also healing from all the trauma in their lives. It also acts as a study into the Kiramman Family dynamics, how Cait moves past her time with Ambessa, and how Vi handled life during her Pit Fighter phase.
Flashbacks with Maddie, Ambessa and others serve as missing scenes to give a look into the thought process and reasoning behind much of what we saw in the show.
This is part 1 of a show continuation i was asked to write. It's pre-written and I will be post approx. 3 chapters per day most days :)FYI the full title used to be Lovers, Hunters: The Clouds are Hanging Low.
NOTE: Not all flashbacks are in order, but you should be able to figure the timeline out.
