Summary
The Guardian and Protector of Positivity, Dream, is a simple sort of spirit who just wants to keep people alive, safe and happy. When his brother and fellow Guardian, Nightmare, is corrupted by the magic of the Tree of Feelings, things begin to be a little more complicated. They are forced to flee the village they spent their entire lives in and learn that the world is far more immense than they ever could have imagined.
When a kind (and vaguely suspicious) stranger opens their doors to them, the twins find themselves apart of something much bigger than themselves, a puppet show where everyone is trying to pull the strings.
After all, the only thing that matters is that the audience is entertained.

She couldn’t see Kaz’s face from this angle, but Kaz always knew she was there so surely he’d know now as well. Surely he’d feel her and know that she was trying to get him out. That she came for him, was fighting for him. If he did, he gave her no indication.

Tommy rolls his eyes at his family before turning his attention back to his plate, tuning out the conversation, having heard this debate many times before.
Despite how annoying they are, it’s nice to feel like his family is still present, as if they are always around. This sense of normalcy never lasted though. Techno has always preferred the company of the local library where he would lose himself in a book, Phil is either working in his home office, at a meeting or sleeping to make up for overworking himself, while Wilbur is so focused on making music that he forgets it used to be the glue that held the family together.’
Or Tommy misses how life used to be, before his mother passed away, before everything changed, and he doesn't know how to make everything right again, so instead, he rebels and pushes his loved ones away.

"His name's Fundy," he said finally, softly and more to himself than to anyone else.

Wilbur looked up, but still didn't look in his direction. Instead, he stared straight ahead, blank, unseeing eyes, and suddenly the first tears ran down his cheeks.
"Sally left us," he whimpered, not even trying to wipe his face. Or maybe he just didn't know how to do it, hands still clenched on the blue blanket.
Phil almost physically felt the last of his naive hope escape from under his fingers.
"Oh. Oh, Wilbur," he sighed, barely recognizing his own voice, not even knowing when he had opened his mouth. "What did you do?"

More like a victim of a natural disaster. As if he had spent hours on the roof escaping a flood, only to be carried away by a tornado.
But burying the knives was still a good idea. The kid seemed to trip over while making a sandwich."

It’s cute, one of those poorly angled selfies only adults can take, but they both look so happy that Techno can’t even laugh at it. The second is an echo of the last thing Phil had told him before he left. Love you, kiddo. Sleep well.
The third text is the one that makes Techno’s heart stop for a moment in his chest.
It’s another unknown number, and all it says is, We need to talk to you.

He was about to give up, maybe call into the void for her again despite the fact it would probably fall on deaf ears, when he heard a giggle from behind him. Immediately, his shoulders slumped in relief. She was fine. His wife was fine. Just trying to give him a heart attack.
“You panic yourself far too much, my love, I just… needed to prepare myself in coming here.” Came Kristen’s familiar voice, causing Phil to close his eyes and smile before turning around to look at her. There was a slight hesitation when she spoke, but he didn’t worry too much about it.
“Well, when my wife wants me to hurry so badly that she summoned me back from my travels halfway across the world and won’t even let me sleep, pardon myself for being-”
Phil’s words came to a sudden halt in his mouth when he looked at her. Properly looked at her. The relieved smile on his face fell into one of shock. He was frozen where he stood for the moment.
As for today, he was too busy staring at the two bundles she was holding carefully against her chest.

The instant the shopkeeper was out of sight, the kid's fingers were in the Nether wart basket, poking at the dry gnarls of fungus. Techno didn't miss the spite in the kid's eyes that said he was doing this precisely because he was told not to. He also didn't miss the way one of the grayish burgundy knobs disappeared under his palm.
There was a noise from under the counter, and the kid's hand flinched away. He flashed Techno a guilty grin, like he was just messing around and causing trouble for the fun of it. His hand slipped down towards his pocket.
Techno caught the kid's wrist before it could disappear inside.
Techno's just trying to sell his wares and move on from this town. Instead, he meets a scrappy kid who smells like death.
