Summary
"I didn't realize this was a funeral."
Dana looks up from studying her hands in the sink (her left ring finger, in particular) to catch Dr. Santos's face in the bathroom mirror.
"It's my party, and I'll cry if I want to," she shrugs.
The evening that was meant to be a celebration of her retirement from The Pitt (for keeps this time, no going back for any reason, boredom be damned) has been largely spent avoiding questions about where her husband is and attempting to discreetly solicit divorce lawyer recommendations from Lena.
It hadn't been her idea. Dana had planned to spend her retirement reconnecting with Benji, repairing the relationship that had suffered under the weight of years of putting patients and coworkers first. Only to find out the week of her retirement that her husband had apparently, for months, been working his way up to informing her that he was done with their marriage, and he wanted to move back home to be closer to his mother.
Which is to say, she's having a bit of a fucking time.

Summary
Cassie has this awful fleeting image of her lying there, stunned not by the pain itself but by the realization that getting back up was going to take a kind of effort she just didn’t know she had anymore.
The thought hurts. More than Cassie expects it to.
Because Dana should never have had to absorb that moment alone.
Because someone should have protected her.
Because it suddenly feels obscene that people like Dana spend decades holding emergency departments together with sheer will and sacrifice only to eventually become vulnerable inside the exact systems they’ve carried for years.
Cassie wishes, fiercely and irrationally, that she could take the fear out of her entirely.
Or: in the weeks after the assault, Cassie wonders if Dana will truly come back. If there's no other way to be certain, she guesses she'll just have to start checking in on her herself.

Summary
She understood the gist of it, she thought. Using a strap couldn’t be compared to saving a life, and Victoria was pretty competent in that department.
If Cassie knew about her plan, Victoria thought she might make fun of her. Not in a mean way, never in a mean way. But in the way that would make Victoria embarrassed, and lose her nerve, and Cassie would fuck her as good as she always did, and Victoria would feel…inadequate. A reminder that she was inexperienced.
or,
The sequel to 'pretty little thing, size queen' where the roles are reversed.
