“Lottie? Lottie Matthews?” Nat asks incredulously. Lottie practically beams that Nat apparently remembers her, but if Nat is being honest with herself, she barely does.
Lottie Matthews was on her high school soccer team for basically a year and a half. They had hit it off well enough, they worked well as a team, and then her rich-as-fuck dad produced some hit movie and hauled his entire family off to California never to be seen again.
So this is where she ended up.

When Lottie woke up that morning, the last thing she exacted to do was frantically clean her house after a random call from an old high school friend had her agreeing to let another old high school friend stay with her, but that was exactly what she was doing now.
“Why me?” Lottie had asked in a groggy voice after she was awoken by said phone call.
"Because no offense, dude, but you’re kinda off everyone’s radar,” Taissa said through the speaker of her phone. "Her boyfriend knows I talk to her and he knows where Van and I live, it’ll be the first place he’ll look for her.”

In fact, once she processes what she’s said, she wants to throw her hand over her mouth and smack herself on the side of the head, but that would just make her look even stupider. It made no sense. She was shoving her cleats into her locker when Lottie —fucking— Matthews rolled up with a paper flower in hand.
"Hey." Lottie smiled like she wanted to, but also like she was holding back because of the bloodthirsty staredown Nat had just given her. "Sorry they're being assholes. You were great today."
Then she handed her the flower and left. It had French words scribbled across one side and pink highlighter on the other, and the tip was ripped like the girl had just torn her class notes in half to make the stupid thing.
She smiled to herself. Lottie fucking Matthews.

And it’s not that the girls aren’t pretty but they’re all painted the same. Positioned the same. It feels gross to look at. Nothing looks pleasant and Shauna certainly can’t ever imagine her and Laura Lee doing those things.
Shauna’s doomed-
“Shipman?” A warm sotto voice calls out. Shauna turns to her left to find Van standing there in a black tee and name badge. Mercury blue eyes flicker to the row of titles in front of Shauna. “Dominating Daddy’s Girl? Seriously?”

Shauna worries she won't live up to Laura Lee's needs so Van helps. Lottie finally gets Natalie out on a date, albeit a group one. And Jackie and Shauna have their first real interaction. And it's nice.

Nat's eyes twitch in barely restrained annoyance. She grips the baby car seat just a little tighter to hold herself back. "Why is it taking my last name?"
A mischievous expression crosses Jackie's face as she playfully wiggles her eyebrows at Nat. "Or maybe we could combine our last names with a hyphen? Scatorccio-Taylor~?"
