"Hey, rookie," one of his coworkers says with a grin, dark hair turned salt-and-pepper with age. His eyes are just as dark as his close-cropped curls and beard, alight with a kind of knowing gleam that puts Leon slightly on edge. "Bored, yet?"
"Maybe a little," Leon says with a laugh, reaching for another folder. "Is this what all of you guys do all the time?"
"Mostly! Not all that exciting here in the West end. Although—" He breaks off, glancing at what Leon assumes are his friends across the room. "We could switch tasks, if you like. Karen, Jeff, and I are supposed to do some inventory down in the firing range, and I'm sure you're eager for a change in pace?"

The Alaskan tundra is frigid around him as he glances down at his compass, a curse on his lips when he sees they're going in the wrong direction, again."Rookie!" he barks into the swirling snow, watching Leon jolt and whirl around. His face is partially obscured by an olive green scarf, those ridiculous blonde bangs sticking out the side of his hat in their typical unruliness. "Where the hell are your landmarks? You're taking us too far South."
