In the back of Rumi’s closet, there is a box. It’s old, the corners worn and the color faded. Inside, there are letters. Dozens of them. Each one is small, with a name written on the front in careful letters.

    ---
Rumi always thought the Golden Honmoon would kill her. Sometimes she still wishes it had.

After the fight on the train, Rumi returns to the penthouse convinced the only way to save the Honmoon is to remove herself from the equation entirely. Mira and Zoey follow her onto the rooftop and finally discover the truth, neither of them react the way Rumi expects.

Or: Rumi learns that being a demon and being loved are not mutually exclusive.

“No, Zoey, please! What’s wrong with Mira? What happened?” Rumi was shaking as Zoey’s gaze hardened.

“Like you don’t know,” Zoey scoffed. “Look for yourself.”

Zoey lifted her blood-stained hands from Mira’s chest to reveal four jagged claw marks through her flesh. Even from where Rumi was standing, she could tell the cuts were deep. The blood was so dark it looked black.

Like someone cut her strings, Rumi collapsed. “No, no, no. NO! Mira!” she cried. “Zo, what happened? Who did this?”

Zoey laughed, but, unlike her normal light giggle, this sound was dark and mirthless. “Look at your hands, Ru. You did.”

    ------

Or, Rumi has nightmares after sealing the Honmoon because sometimes the power of songs and friendship cannot fix years of trauma and conditioned self-hatred. Mira and Zoey are there to deal with the aftermath.

    Summary

Once, when she was ten years old, Rumi had cut herself with her saingeom.

It hadn’t been a deliberate attempt to hurt herself, at least not consciously. It was an act of pure curiosity.

    Nothing more.

The soul woven blades each Hunter carried into battle were harmless to humans, bouncing off the spiritually unaware like rubber and impacting other Hunters like wooden training weapons, painful but mostly harmless.

Demons, by contrast, burst into stardust with a single, solid blow from the sharp edge, with only larger Dokkaebi and stronger Jeosung requiring multiple strikes.

What would happen to her? Half Hunter, Half Demon, two opposites forced together? Would it hurt her? Would it even break her skin?

    Summary

Laying there in the dirt, bleeding out, Rumi thought of Mira and Zoey. Not backstage. But before. She thought of all her most cherished memories, all of which included them. Mira’s suffering from their “disguises” utter lack of fashion sense. Zoey rattling off facts about whatever her current hyperfixation was. Late night meals in the studio. Mira’s searching eyes that always saw more than Rumi wanted to show. Zoey’s teasing grin that never failed to make Rumi smile no matter how she felt.

    Her girls.

She had had such a good life with them. She was lucky to have had them. Everything else was worth it, for the time she got with them. She just wished she hadn’t done so much damage to them, but she couldn’t help being selfishly grateful for the peace they gave her.

Rumi choked on a final breath before it all stopped.

She was done. It was done.

    She wasn’t done.

One second she was laying on the ground and the next she was standing, air whipping past her. It was daytime. She was on the train. Mira was talking.
