Shane could hear the crowd, loud as always in their home barn. It felt electric tonight. He didn't usually let the emotions of the occasion affect him, but after 22 years in the MLH, having accomplished everything he could do as a professional, tonight’s send-off was too much to push all the way down into that small compartment where he could hide all he felt.
But Ilya–Shane felt physical pain in his chest every time he allowed himself to think his name. Their careers still forever tied together until Ilya’s retirement a few years ago. In the quietest of times, Shane could admit he shouldn’t have felt lonely at the top because Ilya was always right there with him.
