Around a mouthful she says, “Waffles remind me of Nina, and the spice will last longer if I chew it. It’s a simple joy. I know those are a physical impossibility for you, but that doesn’t mean the rest of us need to suffer too. Besides,” she takes another monstrous bite, and her voice comes out muffled. “How do you know it’s bad? You’ve never even tried it.”
Perhaps she’s right, he thinks, watching bright red gush at the corner of her mouth. But it’s probably not worth the burn.

Kazimir Vredevelt, as it happens, has a scar above his left ear and not a single memory to his name, but he makes the best apple pie this side of Olendaal. (And if he feels sometimes like someone's walking over his grave, he's sure that's just a bit of wind, and bakes another pie to reassure himself that's all it is.)
On grief, coming back wrong, and surviving a story in which you are the ghost.

Inej’s mother is as short and lean as her daughter, her thick black hair streaked with chunks of silver and white, caught in a long braid down her back. Her eyes are dark and wide, and her mouth is steady. When Kaz doesn't immediately join them at the table, she crosses her arms and raises an expectant eyebrow.
To his right, he hears Inej stifle a snicker into her hand as her eyes flicker between her mother and Kaz.
Amara Ghafa is not in the least bit intimidated by Kaz Brekker, or his reputation, or his fine dark suits.
She looks pointedly at the seat next to Inej. “Join us for dinner, Mr. Brekker.”---

Who is Kaz Brekker?
Most people would say he's a delinquent, cold-hearted, ruthless, bastard of the barrel.
Most people don't know that Kaz Brekker is a lonely child forced to grow up in foster care after his parents died, forced to grow up in foster care alone after Jordie died, forced to do whatever it takes to survive, even if that means putting a few people into the hospital.

Kaz Rietveld was a nine-year-old boy who had just lost his parents when he moved to live with Jakob Hertzoon, the first of many people who will let him down. Luckily for Kaz Brekker, that kid is dead, he died alongside Jordie that day, and now Kaz Brekker is moving in with the Fahey Family, Mr. Fahey, Jesper, and Nina, people who want to help Kaz get over his past trauma's but ever since Jordie died all Kaz knows is that appearances can be deceiving and he vowed to never trust another foster family ever again.

That's probably why she throws caution to the wind and hops a train to London. The city can't be worse than her uncaring mother and cold, distant sisters, can it? She even manages to find a safe place to land with Catherine, the priestess and medium for a church that caters to the ghost-obsessed. There, at least, her affliction doesn't make her feel like so much of a freak.
Or it didn't, until one Anthony J. Lockwood shows up on their doorstep, claiming to be an anthropology student studying religions centered around spiritualism. He takes an odd interest in her, the kind of interest she doesn't know how to interpret. But, like gum on the bottom of her shoe, she can't seem to get rid of him.
