But the real cincher had been an old newspaper article Tim found while researching at the Gotham Public Library (he was supposed to be playing at the park across the street but Tim would rather die than-). It had been about the death of Martha and Thomas Wayne with a blown up photo of eight year old Bruce at their funeral.
From there all Tim had to do was look in a mirror.
The same chubby cheeks and button nose. The same slant of their eyes and cupid’s bow. All Tim had to do was part his hair to the side and gel it back to a neat style and they could be twins.
Or father and son.

Summary
Tim was a lonely kid, and there was only so much to do in an empty house filled with everything but the warmth of living bodies. So when his parents bring back an ancient book that they can’t read from one of their expeditions, Tim asks if he can have it. Unlike with the more fragile and expensive artifacts, they decided to humor him without thinking much on it. He very quickly finds out that the book is in fact an occult grimoire. Now, Tim was generally considered very smart for his age, a genius even. But he was still 10, and he was very curious to see if this book was real. One ritual and one demon later he makes a wager, if the demon can beat him at a game of cards he can take his soul, but if Tim wins then he gets 5 extra years of life. It seemed like a good idea at the time, and the demons at least provided him some entertainment. Now Tim is 17. He’s been 17 for a long time, not that anyone seems to notice his lack of aging.

Tim was a lonely kid left in a house of artifacts. So when he finds a book that can summon demons, he decides to give it a try. Somehow this leads to him becoming practically immortal and John Constantine's apprentice, all without the Bats knowing.

Jason’s honestly surprised he doesn’t get a knife in the gut for that. Tim is wise enough to keep his mouth shut.Wise - Jason decides firmly - but also breathtakingly stupid, because he takes two steps away from the truck and almost falls flat on his face when his injured leg gives out.
Jason catches him, right in time for him to say, “Right. Stab wound. Forgot about that.”Jason sighs, casts his gaze to the sky, and mentally apologizes to Bruce. He’s herding cats here. He and Dick weren’t this bad, were they?
(They were, he knows they were, which just makes this whole fiasco even more annoying.)

In a quiet, random patrol The bats were fighting a random rookie criminal who possessed and used truth gas. After he was tied up and captured, Tim (by mistake) sprayed Bruce and Jason with the truth gas. So they both have to stay in the bat cave until the gas wears off and he ends up having a little chat.
Or
Tim decided to take the initiative and get Bruce and Jason to talk honestly with each other. It was clear to everyone (except them) that they still loved each other, but their emotional intelligence was like a fish out of water. Joker was beyond redemption. Tim had attended so many funerals, so many memorials, stood in front of countless graves, murmured to sobbing victims, sent flowers to hospital rooms. All because the Joker wanted to play with Batman. All because Batman would rather play the game, then put a permanent end to it all.
Even with the no-killing rule, he would find a way to fix it. The Justice League put super-powered criminals into the Phantom Zone, where they could never escape or harm anyone. Surely, Tim could find something like that to imprison Joker.
But now Red Hood, revealed as the Jason Todd, has entered the scene, stage right. Full of righteous fury. Full of murderous intent. Full of hatred towards the Joker. Maybe he doesn't need to build that phantom zone projector...
