Summary
In China, the practice of cultivation was banned many centuries ago, and much knowledge was lost during that dark period. However recently in the modern republic, many ancient techniques were rediscovered and cultivation is finally receiving serious academic research.
Wei Ying is a Senior Lecturer at Yiling Cultivation University who achieved national fame for reaching very high cultivation at a young age (with the accompanying handsome youthful looks) and using those cultivation skills to help the police catch a serial killer.
But this story is not about that case! No, this story is about Wei Ying’s semiannual camping trip to a secret location in the Yiling Mountains, and a chance encounter with a xianxia cosplayer wearing white robes.

He turned the corner in a flash, only for a thick, leather-gloved hand to grab him by the throat and slam him against the wall. A dry gasp tore through him. Tears distorted his vision like a funhouse mirror, scent flaring in warning. The blood rushing to his head brought a flush of heat, in sharp contrast to the chill of the marble wall at his back.
Instinct brought his hands to his neck in a desperate attempt to peel those fingers away, the leather a sickening kind of sticky on his sweaty skin. The grip only tightened, pinky brushing down to press hard on his scent gland. It was maddening, like digging a nail into a mosquito bite to suppress the itch.
He felt his captor lean in. The man took a deep, shuddering breath.
“Wei Ying,” lips brushed against the shell of his ear. Wei Wuxian’s vision went dark.

"You worry me," Lan WangJi tells him seriously. He puts his hands on Wei WuXian's knees for lack of a better place to put them. Wei WuXian places his own hands on top of Lan WangJi's, presumably to stop him from trying again to check his bandages.
"You don't need to worry," Wei WuXian says. "I swear I'm fine. I'll tell you if something feels off. You know me, I'm a huge crybaby whiner."
Lan WangJi frowns at him again. It's true that Wei WuXian can be a bit of a crybaby, but only about injuries that don't actually matter. When it's something important, like a ghost curse or a fundamentally unstable necromantic practice, Wei WuXian keeps it to himself. "Ridiculous," Lan WangJi tells him. Wei WuXian grins down at him.
