JT huffs out a breath and considers going back to bed, pretending he never got the text in the first place. It was sent to a group chat with Gil and Dani, and he figures one of them is bound to answer, but before his screen even has a chance to time out, he's already ruled that out as an option.

Summary
"Bright?" Dani says quietly, drawing Malcolm's thoughts to a sudden and screeching halt. "You good?"
Malcolm blinks hard, shaking the thoughts from his mind before he can get completely lost in them. "Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine."
He lays the marionette back in the box, careful to pile the loose strings on top before closing the lid once again. All of the marionettes were sent with the strings cut loose from the wooden control bar. All of the victims, however, were discovered completely strung up.
And apparently, Malcolm is next.

Summary
It's not like he's unaccustomed to being alone. He spent the latter half of his childhood and most of his teenage years in solitude. Hell, even through Harvard and his tenure with the FBI, Malcolm often found himself isolated from his peers. It's only been since he joined Gil's team that he's started to become reacquainted with companionship, maybe even with friendship.
Which means that one Christmas alone isn't the end of the world.
And Malcolm is quite certain that, if he tells himself that enough, he might actually believe it.

Summary
Gil had been hopeful (maybe naively so) that things had been going better for Bright in Virginia, that a fresh start, fresh state, fresh people, would maybe be enough for the kid to find his footing, to find friends.
He hadn't realized that things had been this bad.

During his time at the FBI, Bright gets assigned a new partner and winds up getting injured on the job. Gil goes to Virginia to help him recover, but it quickly becomes clear that Malcolm may not be telling him the full story.
