Summary
While consumed with grief and survivor's guilt, Kaidan downloads an app that uses artificial intelligence to construct a chat bot from a loved one's digital footprint. He initially downloaded the program hoping for some sense of closure, but he didn't expect the bot to sound so much like her.
It had barely said more than twenty words to him and all of them were like her enough that it hurt. It felt wrong to talk to this bot, this ghost of Shepard’s memory. It was even more unsettling that the AI was so good at what it was designed for.

As Shepard tries to come to terms with her death and subsequent resurrection at the hands of Cerberus, Kaidan looks for assurances that Shepard is still the woman he fell in love with.
Set against the backdrop of the Reaper war, Kaidan and Shepard must both learn how to trust each other again as they navigate falling in love for a second time, all while saving the galaxy— also for a second time, because some things never change.

This story focuses on the relationship between Kaidan Alenko and Kate Shepard through the events of Mass Effect 1, starting with Kaidan growing jealous and concerned about Liara's interest in Shepard. When he brings himself to admit this to Shepard, she reacts differently than he expects. Sparks begin to fly and lines are crossed--to the the initial regret of Shepard. Will these two be able to keep things professional, or end up falling in love despite the regulations about fraternization? The story will stay close to cannon, but I take the liberty of making small adjustments and elaborating on certain things. This will probably only be a few chapters--connecting to my fic about Kaidan's life during the years he believed Shepard to be dead, eventually leading to a fic about them coming together in Mass Effect 3. But it all starts here :)
