Upon the announcement, Hien opened his eyes and glanced from the guard to Lyse before looking back with a shite-eating grin.“Which Hyur?” he asked cheekily.
The xaela guard was less than amused, even more so when Lyse giggled from her spot on the bed.
“You, the male one,” the Oronir replied, annoyance clear as he scowled at them, “Khan Daidukul has requested your presence for the evening.”

It had been almost a year since Hien’s death—a year since the man ordered him away from his side. He wanted Kaishan to protect the villagers in the line of fire, to keep them out of harm’s way—more concerned over their safety than his own. In doing as he was commanded, the shinobi was forced to watch the love of his life get cut down by those damn tin-headed bastards, unable to do nothing.
And, damn him, his loss and the guilt still hurt.
Kaishan’s grief was a difficult thing for him to properly describe when others asked. It was as if there was a hole in his chest—gaping, weeping, and raw—a painful reminder that refused to let him forget. No matter what he did, who he talked to, or how much sake Kaishan drank, he could not find peace from his sorrow.

The pain was indescribable. Kaishan had never felt such agony, such pain, in his life. The scream that the pain ripped from his throat as the Light wracked through his body—like bolts of levin striking at his very core—pierced the air in a blood-curdling cry. When he started to hack and cough, he first thought it was blood, but upon cracking open his eyes, the xaela saw the ground stained with the milky white substance. The same he had seen many times before when encountering sin-eaters. Gods, was he really to become one? Become a Lightwarden? Become a monster? Kaishan felt tears sting his eyes at the thought.
