Summary
Buck almost made it inside before a hand closed around his arm. The grip was hard and deliberate, fingers locking into place like a vice, stopping him cold.
A hand, hard and deliberate, locking onto him like a vice.
The shock hit him so fast his brain lagged behind his body. One second he was reaching for the door’s handle, the next his muscles seized, every instinct screaming wrong before he could even turn his head.
“What the–” The words never made it all the way out.
His breath caught painfully in his chest. His feet refused to move. The hand on his arm wasn’t shaking, wasn’t uncertain. It was steady, confident, like whoever held him had already measured his strength and found it lacking.
Then he was yanked backward.

“I’d trust John B with my life,” he says, no hesitation. “But when something like that is so fresh? When your world is completely flipped on its head? It’s so easy to forget.”
“You told him no.”
“Yeah, I told him no,” JJ shakes his head. “And I watched his face do that thing— that crumple where he’s just so fuckin’ sad, and I was like— fuck. I take it back, I take it all back, do whatever the hell you want to me. Wrap your hands around my neck and be the only reason I can breathe—“

Summary
He giggles and throws himself at Luke’s leg, wrapping his tiny arms around it and tossing his head back to see his daddy fully. He cheeses through his crooked baby teeth and shakes Luke’s leg as he chirps, “Santa, Daddy! Santa!”
Brushing his fingers through JJ’s soft hair, he shoots Georgia a skeptical look as she dances into the room. She sets her radio down on the counter a little carelessly as another Christmas song comes on, then snatches JJ up like he weighs nothing. He giggles and sets his sticky baby hands on her cheeks as she peppers kisses all over his face between tone-deaf lyrics.
Voice a little rough, Luke gives her a pointed look, “Santa?”
“Yeah, Daddy, Santa!” She winks and leans in close to press her lips to his.

"By nine," Buck sighs, starting to fidget. "I know."
"So you'll start to soak the—"
Buck's beer bottle hits the table with a sharp clank.
"God! Yes! I'll soak the damn cake. Between chauffeuring your son and baking for my niece and listening to my brother-in-law gripe about all of his paperwork, which he only has because the guy who used to do it died, Christ," Buck's voice is sharp, dismissive—
And catches Eddie completely by surprise.

By mid-July, Buck was eleven and watched a kid crack his head open on the concrete. His parents rushed in, pressed a towel to the blood and kisses to his forehead, scooped him up and rushed him off.
That night Buck climbed high into the tree, higher than he ever had before, and he let go.
For a moment it felt like he was flying.

Summary
Buck swipes his tongue over his blood-splattered lips, the metallic taste lingering on his tongue. Something sharp pinches the back of his hand, and he waits for the familiar, almost comforting sensation of pain medication to begin to flood through his veins.
The pain begins to recede to a more welcoming ache, though it continues to ripple across his pelvis in small waves. Buck’s body slumps against the rubble as the last of the adrenaline begins to leave his body. His vision swims in and out of focus, but one constant thought manages to break through the fog.
Eddie.
He needs them to know.

Summary
Thundering footsteps come down the hallway, bust into the room.
Eddie, pausing at first in the doorway, then eyes bursting wide in shock. He jumps to Buck’s side, hand warm and heavy across his back.
A guttural sound comes from deep in Buck’s chest–not a scream or a groan, something instinctual and animalistic, a rabbit as the wolf's teeth dig into its neck.
"Buck? Holy shit. Buck, Buck, what did she give you? What did you give him?" Eddie shouts.
"Mom?" Buck whimpers.

Summary
“Did you hear me calling for you?” Eddie asks, unable to hide the mounting desperation — the slight quiver — in the rasp of his voice.
“Yes,” Buck answers. He drops his eyes to the dusty ground.
“Then why?” Eddie hates the way it sounds like begging as the question leaves his lips.
Buck pinches the bridge of his nose and winces as if he forgot about the bruises he has there. “You know, that’s the third time I’ve had to listen to a gun go off without having my eyes on you,” Buck says. “The third time I’ve heard a gunshot, knowing you were there, and had this sinking feeling that it was you who took the bullet.” Buck looks down and shakes his head. With a humorless chuckle, he murmurs, “Again.”

“If you wanted to see me that bad, you could’ve just asked me out.”
There’s a choked sound from the chair. A muffled laugh, quickly swallowed.
Buck’s eyes flick, just once, toward the chair, and then he flushes so fast it’s equal parts alarming and endearing.
“I’m fine,” he says, each word coming with its own zip code.
He always does that. It’s their routine, their little dance. He tries to bolt, she gives him a reason not to, without calling him out. He acts like it doesn’t hurt, she pretends she doesn’t notice the way his jaw tightens, the tremor in his hands.
This time, though, it doesn’t get that far.
“What you are is stubborn,” the guy in the chair says. If there’s meant to be an edge to it, Sam can’t find one. “You took a pretty bad hit to the head, Buck. The helmet came off. You should let them check you out.”
Buck rolls his eyes, but he doesn’t argue. Doesn’t even try.

Summary
“Buck!” Buck’s name exploded from Eddie’s lips like a shot. He elbowed the sheriff off him and limped forward like he wanted to break out into a run.
Buck’s stomach dropped to his feet as he watched the sheriff snarl at Eddie’s back before his face dropped into shock. He drew his gun back out of his holster and Buck wheezed in a breath to call out a warning that got trapped somewhere in his throat.
“Torres!” The sheriff snapped.
A grunt of pain rained down on Buck like pieces of rubble on his too raw skin before the sound of a body hit dirt and a unforgiving arm wrapped around his windpipe.
Okay but what if Earl ended up using Buck as a human shield during the final showdown?
