“S-Shuumei-san…” Miyano sighs, nerve ends tingling as he listens to the uptake in breathing he can hear through the phone. It sounds a little harsher than usual, a bit more mechanical, but Miyano knows just too well how it would sound if Sasaki were here with him. “Do you… are we…?”
“Only if you want to.” Sasaki’s voice is gentle, cradling Miyano in the warmth he is desperately missing next to him right now, their shared bed feeling even emptier.
“I-I do…”
“Are you sure?”
Miyano nods, almost curses when the fact that Sasaki can’t see him settles in once more. “Yes, but…how?”

“That has nothing to do with it!” Miyano protests, trying to make his so-called friends understand just how wrong they are to assume that this is the reason he is a little distracted right now. It’s no problem that they can’t see each other for a week, so Sasaki can double down on his studies. What kind of boyfriend would Miyano be if he didn’t support him in that and complained that they can’t meet up at lunch and after school like they usually would?
“Oh, so he misses him so much he is staring holes into the wall, got it.” It only takes a second for Tashiro’s hand to land on Miyano’s back in an encouraging pat. “Hang in there, Miyano.”

- “Did you follow the recipe?”
Miyano frowns at the notes in front of him, trying to remember if any of the details slipped his mind while mixing the dough. It’s a simple enough recipe, meant to be doable by a total beginner. Which Miyano isn’t quite sure describes him since he has at least managed to back cookies once before. But since all of the attempts over the last ten years have ended in him conceding and buying a cake, maybe that’s exactly the kind of skill level he has. At least Ogasawara seemed to think so when Miyano called him, asking for advice.
“Mostly, yes.”
- “What do you mean, mostly?”
“I might have broken the scale halfway through and had to eyeball some of the-“
The groan on the other end of the line makes Miyano stop mid-sentence.

Summary
Sasaki chuckles, lets his lips brush against Miyano’s ear, adoring the slight tint of red that spreads to it immediately. “This is the best Valentine’s Day I ever had, Myaa-chan.”
“You said that last year, too.”
“Because it was then, but this year is even better.” Sasaki presses a soft kiss behind Miyano’s ear, revelling in the soft sigh and the small shiver he feels running through his boyfriend. Since the cake doesn’t leave him enough time to pick up on it right now, though, Sasaki settles for peppering Miyano’s neck with soft kisses.
“Even though I dropped the flour?” Miyano asks quietly after a moment while his fingers trace Sasaki’s arms.
“Especially because you dropped the flour.” Sasaki keeps his lips ghosting Miyano’s neck while he talks, finding it hard not to let the small kisses turn into little nips.
“Now you’re just being silly…” Sasaki hears the smile in Miyano’s voice despite also picking up on a small shaking in it that he isn’t sure what caused it until Miyano continues talking. “I have a surprise for you, though. Do you mind if I get it?”

But no matter how many people he went on a date with, it just never felt right somehow. “I have to start somewhere. I’m not expecting to find my soulmate after just a few dates.”
“I wouldn’t exactly call 42 ‘a few’.”
Miyano wants to snap back something, anything, to make this feel less humiliating than it is. There is no reason for Kuresawa to make up the numbers. While math has never been Miyano’s strong point, his friend’s career in astronomy comes with a certain necessity to engage in his worst subject. So, while he isn’t sure just why Kuresawa is keeping track of the numbers, he is fairly certain that he is correct anyway.
“You have a better idea?”
“Actually, yes,” Kuresawa says with a hint of a smile that makes Miyano shift uncomfortably on his chair. It gives off the feeling that this was exactly the question his friend had waited for. “Let me organize a date for you.”

It’s been a while since Sasaki asked instead of just catching Miyano’s willing lips. But something about being in their own little space, free from all distractions and interferences, makes Sasaki’s heart flutter the same way it did when he first fell in love with Miyano, makes him feel almost shy to just be holding his boyfriend.
Rather than answer, Miyano gently moves Sasaki away from his shoulder, cups Sasaki’s face with his hands before leaning down and kissing him. It’s soft, gentle, similar to the first time they kissed out in the park near Sasaki’s house. The first kiss in their new home, in their new life together.

Fuck this...
Sasaki leans against the building wall behind him, slides down until he sits uncomfortably on the cold stone. He reluctantly wets his lips before rubbing them with the back of his hand, removing the last stains of red that he is sure have gathered in the corners of his mouth. Despite the warmth in his body already fading, Sasaki knows her blood will last him comfortably for at least a week. He won’t have to worry about the nagging pain in his body from his veins drying out for at least that long.
He lets his head sink on his knees, folds his arms over the back of his head as his mind starts getting foggy. Even though he just sated his urges, Sasaki can already feel the nagging voice in his head telling him to find someone else, to chase the faint feeling of life that only fills his body while he has his teeth dug into someone’s neck. It doesn’t matter how much he tries to resist it, in the end, the hunger always, always wins.
And Sasaki hates it every single time.

After 200 years devoid of meaning, Sasaki happens to meet Miyano, a young medical examiner, while he is on the autopsy table.

“Thank you, Miyano.” The orange-haired non-delinquent says with what must be the brightest smile Miyano has ever seen.
“H-how do you know my name?”
Miyano doesn’t remember telling him. They do go to the same university but seeing that he has never encountered him during class or in his department, he doubts they are studying in the same course. The customer’s eyes shine with amusement as he laughs and points to the name tag.
“I can read, you know? I’m Sasaki, I think I’ve seen you around campus before.”
Miyano feels the heat in his face and hurries to hide it behind his hands. Of course Sasaki – somehow knowing his name makes Miyano’s heart beat just a little faster – would be able to read his name tag.
