A social media message, received in the early night hours.

"Do you ever think about the "You" who didn't make it? And if you had a chance to save her, would you try?"

    Bookmarker's Notes

Great take on the Circus folk getting in touch with and working with their real-world counterparts. Really shines when it comes to the materiality of them all being on a computer, with a lot of fun interjections of fake computer screenshots.

    Summary

Faced with this unknown social threat, the frog fell back on instinct.

"Yyyyyyyup," answered 'Ribbit' casually. "Long time no see, guys!"

She didn't know any of these fucking people.

     ---

In late August of 2017, a series of .zip files were transmitted to Conversant Solutions, a company investing in computational and robotics technologies. When compiled, these files divulged a nigh-impenetrable thicket of LISP programming, a digital facsimile of the C&A office building circa 1996, and five "neural scans."

Despite buying out C&A nine years prior, only one of ConverSol's many hires held the prerequisite experience interfacing with C&A tech to parse this data. The fact that said experience involved breaking into a disused building to get high with her buddies is neither here nor there.

A simulation is coded, a headset donned — and a second copy of Ribbit hurtles headlong into the void.

    Bookmarker's Notes

This fic is absolutely off-the-wall bugnuts and I love it. It's basically about rationalist AI worshipers catching the scent of the digital circus and trying to manipulate it to their own ends. Also there's some alternate universe shit going on, like, in-canon. Also there's so much SOMA shit going on that a character literally explains their predicament by going "I'VE BEEN FUCKING SOMA'D!" Also it takes place concurrently with the build-up to the Juggalo March on Washington in 2017. And it keeps breaking into different formats that are more poetic and elusive. It starts in medias res and you're playing catch-up with how absolutely fucked everything is constantly. Way outside my usual wheelhouse -- there's effectively no Jax even when there is a Jax -- but my God is it astonishing.

Recovery is the hardest thing you will ever go through. Learning to be a better person is agonizing. Trying to do both is an exercise in absurd futility, and no one can do it for you.

It's also the only way things can ever get better.

So walk, crawl, scream, and push that boulder up the hill. Imagine Sisyphus happy, so that one day you might imagine the same for yourself.

    Summary

Pomni’s last conversation with Jax is still running through her head – and her body, judging by the way she keeps flickering and twitching. She’s gone, Pomni couldn’t stop it, and the Circus is still a complete fucking mess.

But Jax left something behind that the other abstractions didn’t. In those last moments, before everything faded to white, Pomni was able to witness her remaining memories and distorted perceptions.

The framework of the Digital Circus was built with a single purpose: Take people’s memories and use it to create copies that will live forever.

Can it still work from the inside, and with so little data? Is it even worth trying?

There’s only one way to find out.
