“S'not your fault that—”
“—I hurt you,” Susie finished. She chewed on the concept, the edges of her voice frantic, her throat thick. “Because you deserved it.”
“Yes.” Kris pressed her hands against their chest. They smiled in a way that failed to be reassuring. Each desperate breath shuddering through their lungs confirmed everything Susie didn't want to know. “S’fine. It’s okay.”
Kris burned like a charred pan straight out of the oven, or an oil fire stoked by liquor. Susie reeled away. “You—you were trying to set me up,” Susie accused, trying to edge words around the chasm opening in her gut. “You were trying to get me to hit you.”
Kris wants Susie to hurt them. They need her to hurt them. Susie isn't as on board with the idea as they are.

“So, about your, uh… girlfriend,” Monster Kid stammers. “Are you guys, like… fighting? She’s way scarier than usual…”
From across the schoolyard Susie shoves Snowy out of her way remorselessly, almost crushing the apple juice in her hand from the might of her grip. Everyone stares fearfully as she passes.
“I’m working on it,” Kris says.
Kris has never been witness to a functional relationship, but they'll fight tooth and nail to set their own example.
