Summary
Anthony J. Crowley is the best police officer in London. He is so talented that he makes his colleagues and superiors look like mere traffic wardens.

In 1689, Hob Gadling and Dream meet once more, after Hob has lost everything. That night, their meeting goes on longer than expected when the conversation turns to what it means to live, to lose, and to be the fathers of dead sons. Le Technicien s'est toujours cru artificiel, dépourvu des tares des humains. Mais sa rencontre avec Bilquis a déclenché en lui un phénomène inattendu. Désormais capable d'éprouver des émotions, il ne peut compter que sur l'aide de M. Monde pour apprendre à nommer et supporter chacune d'entre elles.
Il sait cependant que derrière le sourire tordu de l'autre dieu se cachent d'immenses mensonges. Dans l'ombre, la promesse de la guerre couve encore entre Anciens et Nouveaux ; le Technicien se demande s'il n'est pas devenu le parfait pantin prêt pour l'ultime sacrifice avant les combats.
Car dans ses veines, inédit et interdit, brûle un désir qui ne restera pas sans conséquences.
