Worse, embarrassment shot through him. He had let the sound escape him in his surprise.
Rocky startled at the noises. "Grace is okay, question?"

The texture of my entire tablet shifts as the video plays.
It is a recording of the very room we are in. The angle shows the room from above, looking over the beds. In each bed, I can make out the general shape of a human covered by something. Three in total.
I wait for something to happen. Why is there a recording of the crew in their comas?

Summary
Hob Gadling had worked as a professor in London for some years. It had always been the same routine each semester, each day. Every day he returns to the same flat, the same deafening silence.
After several years at the university, Hob meets a strange colleague. Something feels familiar about him, but it is impossible that they know each other. Hob would have remembered the mysterious and shut-off stranger had they met before. He would know of he had run into the same emotional walls before as he tried to strike up a conversation with the entirely disinterested man.
Nevertheless, they cannot avoid one another as they continuously meet on campus. Neither can Hob deny that this stranger looks quite appealing from some angles. -

“It's a series of four high pitched chirps and ‘meep’ sounds that I recognise as ‘Love.’ He's just repeating it, over and over, sometimes with his anticlimactic, little ‘Grace’ beep interspersed here and there. The laptop doesn't pick it up, he's so fast, but I could never mistake it. It's one word, a dozen times. It never gets less meaningful.”
The fact that Grace and Rocky don't cuddle at least once is a travesty that Rocky will not stand for at all, even if it means having to witness his stupid friend leak everywhere. I wholeheartedly agree.

Summary
Rocky moves back in to the Hail Mary. Grace is still reckoning with the very real possibility he could still die, even with the taumoeba. While they wait for Rocky's things to decontaminate, Grace makes the incredibly stupid decision to try and spare Rocky from any more survivor's guilt than what he's already dealing with.
Or: Grace is telling Rocky why a schoolteacher's in space before he ends up stuck with a coward on a four year journey, or not at all.

I panic.
I scramble back, blubbering something that isn't even words, my hand slapping across the surface of the table behind me, searching blind for anything, anything. It closes around the wrench, and I throw it as hard as I can at the creature without a single conscious thought beyond terror. It hits the ball with a terrible clang and bounces off.
The thing inside squawks with alarm and skitters back, wobbling too and fro for a second as the glass-like panels tilt face-to-face on the floor under its weight. It chirrups and squeals at me loudly, frantically waving two of its arms. The computer to my left spits out; "Grace!! Grace!! Is just Rocky!!"Bookmarked by Cntrlaltdelete

Grace struggles on the trip back to Erid. Some help from his best friend helps to put him back on track.

“Rocky, what on Earth are you doing in—” I stop in my tracks. Or, more accurately, I trip, stumble, and then stop in my tracks. Letting out a stream of half-curses, I turn around to glare at the thing that's definitely bruised the front of my calf.
That's when I see Rocky.
He's… in a suit. Not his ball, but — oh my God — an actual clear, xenonite suit!
It's comprised of a lot of small, triangular xenonite panels held together by some kind of… glue? It’s clearly different to what he used for his ball, since it’s completely flexible and way more form-fitting. I can't even begin to imagine how long it took for Rocky to assemble all of those little panels. They're more like shards, actually, reflecting the light of the ship in little spots all over the room, similar to a disco ball.
The sight is enough to bring tears to my eyes. I doubt it was intentional, but it's really beautiful.
