“Pretend we don't know each other?” Shane repeats, a little confused in all honesty. Wasn't therapy about talking?
“Yes. You are meeting for the first time in this room. Introduce yourselves.”
Shane shifts in his seat, slowly turning to Ilya. It's not all that different from the first time they'd actually met; the awkward vibes radiating off Shane are almost identical. They're just missing a snowy forecast and a cigarette.
He decides to go a step further, standing up. It feels the right thing to do under the circumstances. Who meets for the first time sitting down? He takes a step forward, holding his hand out to Ilya. Or not Ilya. This random man he’s about to meet, who happens to look a lot like Ilya. Ilya takes the cue, standing from his own chair with a shake of his head. He takes Shane’s hand, shaking firmly.
“I’m Shane, uh, Shane Hollander.”
Ilya nods. “Ilya Rozanov.”

One of the first things John did was to write up step-by-step instructions on how to conduct a proper job interview before handing it over to Mycroft for his perusal. There were no kidnapping, deserted car parks or stolen therapy notes anywhere on that list.
(Or the one where John returned from the war and ended up working for Mycroft as his personal assistant slash doctor on retainer. Everything was fine, until he was sent to post bail for one Sherlock Holmes.)

Shane gets in the car and slams the door shut.
“What was that?” his dad asks, voice slightly worried.
“Nothing,” Shane says unconvincingly, looking down at his hands, tearing at the skin around his fingernails.
“Didn’t look like nothing, bud. It’s unlike you not to say bye to your friend like that. Or slam the door.”
“Ilya Rozanov is not my friend, Dad.”

Dean really should not be meeting a fae lord in the forest, no matter how handsome he is. What he should do is his job. He should get rid of Cas. Permanently, if his father has anything to say about it.
Cas has probably got him under some kinda spell. That's gotta be why he's being such an idiot about this. What else could it be?

“I’m putting in a transfer request to Carleton this afternoon.”
Ilya gets off his bike and wraps his sweaty arms around Shane’s sweaty shoulders, presses their sweaty heads together and holds him tight. “Nooo, Hollander, you cannot leave me. Who will put Barrett and Marly in time out when they fuck up too many shots in a row?”
“I’m sure Bood will do it. He loves bossing people around.”
Bood stands up straight and salutes his captains. “I take the title with great honor. Enjoy the Ravens, Hollander—your legacy of being a chaste Victorian debutante will be remembered fondly but not carried on.”
This snaps that last thread of Shane’s refined patience. “I can pick up girls! I have no problem getting numbers and calling them and talking!”
Hazy smirks. “Innocent until proven guilty.”
“I can pick people up,” Shane says again, moving off his bike and out of Ilya’s sweaty embrace. “And I don’t have to do it by concocting schemes or stripping on top of the LAX bros’ coffee table.”
Or, after some team chirping at Shane's expense, Ilya accidentally interrupts a few of his potential dating prospects and then keeps on doing it less than accidentally

“You know, statistically, I’m much less likely to get hit by a car. I’m not the one that almost walked into traffic a few minutes ago,” Shane says. “That was all you, Rozanov.”
He winks. “It is okay. I am very strong. A car could not run me over, I would run the car over with my big muscles,” he pats his bicep. “I am like that big green man. Very strong. Very angry. Massive dick.”
Shane flushes. “You’re not the fucking Hulk, man, shut up. You could not fight a car.”

“You’re not Lily,” he said, his voice accusing and his eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“No, I am not,” she agreed. “Lily sent me here to take you to her place.”
Shane looked dubious. “You know Lily?”
“Yes,” Svetlana nodded. “The real Lily.”
Shane huffed a little. “Then what’s Lily’s favourite colour?”
Svetlana raised her brows. “Do you even know Lily’s favourite colour?”
Shane blinked. “No, why do you ask?”
Svetlana stared at him for a few moments, her mind whirling with the set of circumstances that led her to standing in a hospital room on a Thursday morning with one of the best players in the league on more drugs than seemed necessary.
.
Or, in which the game happens in Boston and Ilya comes up with a very bad, very last minute plan to play Shane's nurse (with the help of Svetlana and identity theft).

Summary
Shane watches Ilya shove a hand through his hair, waits for him to meet his eyes. “You pretend to want things, pretend I can have things that we both know you won’t let me have,” he says, his newfound self-esteem carrying him past the point of no return. He wishes he’d never discovered it, because it’s making Ilya’s face do something awful.
“Oh, you mean I hurt your feelings?”
Close enough, Shane supposes, his chest aching again. He goes to lift his hand again, sees Ilya zero in on the movement, doesn’t. “I guess so.”
Ilya scoffs, mean and sharp. “So sorry, Hollander, I didn’t mean to make you get so emotional about a casual fuck.”
Asshole. So many times he has lobbed the word at Ilya in exasperation, reluctant affection and disbelief, but now he thinks it with vitriolic anger. “I think you should go.”Shane finally decides that Ilya's ability to weaponise sex isn't enough for him anymore. Ilya doesn't take it well, but Shane holds firm. Then they start to text about it. Sort of.

They crowd the bar (his bar, mind you, the one he introduced Sam to in the first place), martinis in hand, lounging around and exchanging pleasantries like this is some fucking Hilton Hotel bar. The air is subdued and metropolitan. Strangely and glitteringly robotic, they move all stiff and formal, practiced movements that belong inside of a Wall Street office."
A holiday 80's au in which Dean, a bored mechanic, signs up for a penpal service on a drunken whim and winds up with the strangest yet most interesting penpal he could imagine, all while becoming maybe-sort-of-friends with the asshole lawyer who keeps stealing his diner booth. “Eeleeyah, come to my cottage,” Ilya mocks, voice muffled by Shane’s skin. “Don’t go to Russia. Come to my house instead. Is so private. No one will know…we will be completely alone. Together.”
“Oh my god, is that Ilya Rozanov?” the intruder yelps like he's about to start hyperventilating. “Why is Ilya Rozanov half-naked in our kitchen, Shane?”
“Okay, I know how this looks,” Shane tells Ilya, “But I mean, technically, we are still alone. Together.”

What if the video never leaked and their relationship was still a secret when Shane joined the Ottawa Centaurs? The team wait in anticipation for Rozanov's reaction to his career-long rival joining their team... but wait a minute, they're jumping into each other's arms, giggling like a couple of schoolgirls?
Aka 5 times Ilya and Shane’s 'friendship' seems really gay and the 1 time everyone realises it’s been actually gay the whole time.
Cue the Ottawa Centaurs being absolutely clueless, the Montreal Metros mourning the loss of their best player, and the Centaur WAG's (+Harris) being absolutely done with their ignorant partners.

“Ilya Rozanov,” Shane repeats slowly, letting himself taste the words. He grins. “Wow. You’re, like, a really good player. How come you’re in Canada for summer camp? Is that weird to ask? Sorry if that’s weird. I just meant-”
Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”

The problem was that everyone who played for Boston, except for Ilya, was like a million years old and had forgotten what fun was, if they’d ever known. Summary
“Hollander’s Metros have had a challenging few years, with back-to-back knee injuries and a concussion keeping the two-time Stanley Cup winner and Olympic gold medalist off the ice for three consecutive postseason runs. Hollander is apparently back to fighting trim, but everyone’s wondering if that will still be true come April. The Metros have promised that they’re behind their franchise star one hundred percent, but there are signs they might be hedging their bets. The Metros announced last week that they have penned a deal with San Francisco’s dynamic young Russian star, center Ilya Rozanov. The move has sent shockwaves through MLH, as San Francisco was widely expected to sign a contract extension with Rozanov, who became a restricted free agent in June.”

amazing work-- the characters and their dynamics, especially the dialogue, but also the way that the whole plot line was such a steady backbone to the more emotionally-heavy relationship growth that made me feel so many things-- how did this make me love them even more???
idk if any of that even makes sense. i'm sure i'll come back to put this in better words when i read again. but yeah, would definitely recommend
