Summary
Over the years, Zoey inadvertently develops a ritual-- on the nights when she can't sleep, when the darkness presses at her, she sneaks into Mira's room for comfort. Turns out she's not the only one who takes comfort from this ritual.

Summary
Nothing in Mira's life had ever been blameless. It was always someone’s fault. Her brother’s, for being a coward, for putting Mira in the firing line to save his own skin. Her father’s, for thinking violence would make her the person he wanted her to be. Her mother’s, for telling her she wasn’t good enough, that she deserved it, for not protecting her.
Hers, for being too aggressive, too feckless, too difficult to love.
Celine’s, for every lie she’d told Rumi.
Being angry and protective is all well and good, but it's not always what people need.

Summary
They were so much better at speaking their love. For her, for each other. Zoey had always been like that, even before the lines of their relationships had shifted. And Rumi, once the walls finally all came down, it was like a floodgate. But Mira — Mira didn't know how to do that. She hated that she didn't know how to do that, because she felt it so much. So she poured all of her big feelings into actions instead. It felt more natural, to show her love this way.
And now she couldn't.

Summary
“You know Valentine’s Day is coming up, and I…” Rumi’s fingers toyed with the edge of her notebook. She hesitated, then smiled certainly—like she’d made a decision. “And I—well, would you maybe—”
Mira didn’t let her finish.
The words tangled in her chest, sharp and panicked. She could already hear it—Jinu this, Jinu that. Some request for help picking something romantic. Advice she absolutely did not want to give—at least, not without a solid week to prepare herself. The idea of sitting there, nodding along while Rumi talked about her boyfriend, made something twist painfully in her chest.
“I’m so sorry.” Mira blurted, already shoving her chair back with an uncomfortable scrape. “I… I didn’t realize how late it was. I really have to go.”

OR: Mira being oblivious while Rumi repeatedly hits her over the head with the "pls ask me out" stick. And then they fuck about it.

Summary
Mira has been going over each little thing for the past week. Meticulously turning them over in her mind, replaying events in her head until she’s sick from remembering. It’s something like a punishment. A constant reminder of all the ways she fucked up; hardly feels like enough atonement after hearing everything that Rumi has gone through her entire life.
Rumi stops being able to sing. Rumi starts completely shutting down, worse than either of them have ever seen. Rumi starts pulling away. There are nights where Mira swears Rumi isn’t in her room, but she can’t prove it. Rumi starts obsessively wearing layers—turtlenecks paired up with jackets and compression shirts underneath all of that. Rumi starts being strangely combative and harsh. Rumi snaps at her in a way that is completely uncharacteristic for her. Rumi won’t sing their song, even with the world caving in around them, as if she wouldn’t mind if the world did end.
Mira hasn’t stopped feeling guilty.
