The body was supposed to acclimate to any constant it was exposed to. That was the promise, or the threat—Nezumi wasn’t sure which—threaded through every play and poem and back alley encounter he had known. Treat desire as an exploitable human weakness long enough, and eventually the act would become nothing more than an exchange, the hurt after would dull to a manageable ache, even if you were the sort who learned to go numb rather than burn in its wake. That was the math he had learned, and it was supposed to make everything easier. It was supposed to make none of it matter.
He had been wrong.

Summary
Shion walked bareheaded, utterly unbothered by the rain. His white hair was quickly drenched, turning almost translucent where it framed his face, rain tracing down his neck and soaking his shirt so it clung to every lean line of his body. He moved with an easy grace, as if the storm had been made for him. Nezumi watched him through the veil of coat and rain—the sight was oddly electric, stirring something hot and reckless in his gut.
Or that one time Nezumi ate twice within the same hour.

From one horizon to the other, just the same straight, unbroken road.” He uttered the words without a quaver, but his eyes drifted as he spoke and fixed somewhere just above Nezumi’s head, unseeing. The mannerism was so unlike him that for a heartbeat, Nezumi felt he was staring at a stranger.

Shion had gone outside about an hour ago as the water had dripped sluggishly down the stairs, carrying mud and sludge down into the library entrance. The rain wasn’t heavy—nothing like that storm in which he’d met Nezumi—but the drizzle was cold and oppressive, wetting his bangs against his forehead and seeping into his clothes.
The dull rain left a haze over the horizon, covering the existence of any stars that might have otherwise shown. It had already been well past midnight, even then, and Nezumi hadn’t come home yet.

"How do you know Nonagesimus has gone somewhere dangerous?" asked Isaac. "Have you wired some kind of alert system?"
"It's, uh. It's on the schedule," said Gideon. "I just... forgot. Because of the bread."
Nobody was convinced by this, least of all Gideon.
"It's a Ninth House thing," Gideon went on, backing away with increasing desperation. This was a slightly more plausible explanation, if only because nobody wanted to look too closely at what fell under the awful skeletal-ribbed and rotting umbrella of Ninth House things. "Gotta go—!" And she was out the door, gone.
But it wasn't a Ninth House thing, except inasmuch as it was happening to the only two representatives of the noble and decrepit Ninth House on this quite literally godforsaken rock. Gideon knew Harrow had gone somewhere dangerous—knew that Harrow was back in the lab where they had only just completed a horrible trial—because she could see it, clear as day: an awful overlay on her vision of that terrible dangerous room and a pair of terrible dangerous hands drawing some kind of ward next to the plinth.
The hands were definitely Harrow's.
This was definitely a problem.
