As soon as Ruby passes through Weiss’ wall and into her room, Weiss throws a glass of water at her. It, of course, falls to the ground, and Ruby watches the fluffy-looking carpet soak up the liquid.
Clicking her tongue, she looks up at Weiss. “Did you just throw water at me?”
Weiss looks back and forth between stained carpet and the now-empty glass with a glare. “It’s holy, supposedly.”
Ruby’s jaw drops. “You think I’m, like, a demon or something?”

Ruby dreads sleeping, because what that means for her is astral-projecting around Vale aimlessly while her body gets the rest it deserves.
Then, she finds a girl who can see her in her astral form. And Ruby no longer dreads sleeping.

That need— that primal need— to take, claim, mate. She shot up immediately like lightning injected into her veins, back ramrod straight as she stared down at the two omegas who were curled up on either side of her, now looking up at Rumi with twin expressions of confusion and annoyance at suddenly being woken up.
“You’re both going into heat,” Rumi said plainly. Straight to the point.
It wasn’t a question, but a statement. A fact. Final.

Weiss’ entire world had been turned upside down in less than twenty-four hours, and she was expected to live the rest of her life with this grief. Sure, she had her friends to rely on, but Ruby was Yang’s little sister. She didn’t want to be a burden.

“Yeah,” Blake says, frowning. “They were red a second ago. Now they’re purple.”
“Weird,” Yang says cheerfully. “Must be the fluorescents.”
(Blake, fleeing an abusive relationship and the memory of a night that she doesn't fully understand yet, decides to spend her last year of high school on the tiny, rainy island of Patch, living with her parents' old friend Sienna.
