Caitlyn Kiramman joined the Alliance in the hopes that she could put her excellent rifle skills to good use saving the galaxy from the reapers. This fic has expanded far beyond its original scope, to the point that the stranded part isn't going to actually happen until closer to Chapter 30, so here's my attempt at a more accurate summary:
This is a story of Caitlyn and Vi on an Era of Exploration expedition ship to recover a mysterious plant from a remote island. Caitlyn is a talented but overlooked botanist, socially isolated from her peers. Vi is the ship's first mate with a bit of a chip on her shoulder, and an uncanny ability to be friendly without ever letting anyone close enough to be an actual friend.
This is a slo(ooo)w burn love story that embraces all the in-between, boring parts of life where relationships grow, so they're going to spend several chapters each being enemies, then friends, then finally learning to be lovers. They'll spend time together, they'll get to know one another, and their relationship will grow (in a way that I hope feels as authentic to you as it does to me) before their bond is ultimately tested.
There is an MCD, but it's not Caitlyn or Vi.
There is smut in this fic, but this is not a smut fic.
Also, I don't overuse the nickname "Cupcake."

Blinds her with a pen light—“Called it,” she mumbles when he confirms she’s concussed—and presses two pills and a warm mug into her hand. It smells herbaceous. Familiar.
“I brought the good stuff from home,” Dr. Kiramman confesses, and it takes her a moment to understand he means tea. “Extra honey for you. I know you haven’t acquired the taste.”
He’s right in that she only actually drank it once, the first time it was offered—the afternoon they spoke to the Council, several lifetimes ago. But she tasted it just this morning in Caitlyn’s mouth, grassy and sweet. So she pops the pills and takes a sip. Tries not to think about whether that terrified kiss over breakfast was their last. “I want to see her.”
After the war, Vi and Cait recover, and rebuild.

This is an enemies to friends with benefits to lovers arc set in a modern coffee shop/café AU. I am writing it specifically at the request of my wife, who has a thing for barista-centric fanfics and loves Caitlyn/Vi. Chapter titles are quotes from Arcane.

The crease deepens in Vi’s cheek until the smile breaks through, and when they’re back on the highway with the wind thundering through the open windows, sun on her skin and her hair cutting across her vision so that Vi comes to her in flashes of white teeth and black glasses, in arms shifting to the sixth gear, her voice full and loose as she sings, Caitlyn stops herself from closing her eyes around the moment because she can already see herself years from now running her thumb over this one like a worn photo from a wallet and she doesn’t want to be there yet, in the future where all of this is behind her — she wants to be here, now and in it, in the possibility that it could go on forever. Like asphalt, like sun.

And if this had happened even a week ago, Vi wouldn’t have given the matter a second thought before knocking this girl’s lights out and running away with Powder. Wouldn’t have considered another option for longer than maybe two seconds—just enough to rub it in her new friend’s pretty face, right before leaving her to the whims of the woods—before all bets were off.
