Summary
Frodo loses his parents at a very young age but has the fortune to be adopted by his highly spirited Uncle Bilbo.
Raised under loving care at Bag End, the fauntling blossoms into a kind and empathic young hobbit who gets only sad when he witnesses his uncle’s occasional bouts of melancholy. The desire to uncover the reasons for Bilbo’s sadness eventually leads to a story about his uncle’s adventure with Gandalf and a dwarven company - without the unhappy ending, of course (Frodo is only 14, Bilbo will have you know!).
Frodo wants to know everything about the dwarrows that his uncle traveled with but Bilbo always turns his answers into stories about cranky fire breathing dragons, irrepressible wizards, and the lyrical beauty of Rivendell. What is a fauntling to do when he is convinced that there is only one thing that can make Uncle Bilbo happy again?

Summary
An old Dwarven ritual demands a new king perform a fertility rite to ensure a prosperous reign, especially in times of hardship. Much to Thorin's chagrin, his Council addresses this issue. But nobody wants to answer the king's official request to perform the ritual with him. This apparent lack of loyalty enrages Bilbo, and he openly promises his aid to Thorin – even though he has no idea what kind of ritual we're speaking about. When somebody explains it to him, the Hobbit is mortified, but will steadfastly stand by his given word.

The sixth night they set up camp for the night Bilbo silently ventured off into the dense tree line, only to return after quite some time; carrying grass and flowers and twigs. They had all stared, for Dwarves were nothing if not curious in the arts of crafting, be it stone or plant. It had taken a while, a long time indeed, before any shape was taken. That had been the first time, but many times followed. After the events in the Goblin Tunnels it had become custom for them to sit by the fire, accompanied by the soft rustle of the leaves between Bilbo's fingers and the scent of Thorin's tobacco. Thorin doesn't dwell on the development. It just became, and now it was.
He never wonders why Bilbo seems so set on making crown after crown, never quite satisfied. Never bothers to ask. It's not until weeks later that Bilbo's reasons became clear. Gently he places the crown atop the Dwarf's head. Thorin lets him, completely in awe and shock alike. But then Bilbo's face breaks into a smile, accompanied by a small beam of delight as he steps back to regard the view in front of him.
''There. Finally one suited for a King.''

Written in response to a prompt by thotinshield on Tumblr:
"my brain is filled with au where thorin is considered unattractive by dwarven standards, bilbo thinks hes handsome, and is pining after him, but thorin is in the classic situation of having to get married and dealing with lots of suitors and theres a bit in there about bilbo hearing some of the dwarrowdams gossiping about how thorin is "ugly" and bilbo being like WHAT"
Erebor needs a queen, and Thorin is set to marry a dwarrowdam to be his consort. No matter how much it breaks his heart, Bilbo takes it upon himself to ensure Thorin only receives the best and decides to scope out the candidates. Everything goes well, and he finds one that looks promising, until he uncovers a rather disturbing fact about the crop of potential consorts.

It was never meant to end like this. It had gone from a dangerous battle, but one they were sure to win, to their enemies decimated with Bilbo lying cold and still on the icy cliff. In the aftermath of the battle, unable to bear haunting the halls where he was consumed by his gold sickness, Thorin left Erebor. He knew not where he was travelling, only that he could no longer stay in that infernal mountain.

Prompt: AU, Erebor never fell. Thror’s goldsickness is getting worse by the year, and when Thorin tries to speak out against one of his grandfather’s more tyrannical decisions (of which he has been making more and more as his sanity erodes)he is publicly shamed by the cutting of his beard and cast out, with a vague promise that if he ‘redeems himself’ in Thror’s eyes he will be able to return to Erebor.
Thorin goes into exile and spends years as a wandering smith and itinerant labourer until he finds his way to the Shire and meets Bilbo Baggins. They have a romance and settle together, and for a little while Thorin is able to find a degree of happiness, for all that he sorely misses Erebor and his family.
Eventually, however, a group of dwarves arrive in the Shire, led by Gandalf the Grey, in search of their missing prince, as Frerin, the new king, is every bit as gold-mad as his predecessor, if not worse. They are, therefore, rather surprised to find their missing prince working as a blacksmith in a place like the Shire.Series
