The chime sounded as the elevator arrived. Shane rolled his shoulders back and gave himself one final look in the mirrored surface. His reflection split in two as the doors opened in the center like a hungry mouth about to swallow him whole. Where Shane’s face had stared back at him a split second ago stood Rozanov.
A black hole opened itself in the center of Shane’s torso, dragging his organs, muscles, bones, nerve endings from the furthest points of his body inwards to collapse upon themselves. His brain was static on a muted television. Instructions failed to materialize; he had no plan for this.
Rozanov stared at him, unmoving except for an almost imperceptible hitch in his breath. Time slowed. It had a funny way of doing that around Rozanov.

There is a moment of ringing, brutal silence. Shane’s chest is heaving like he can’t quite get air in. Rozanov is staring at him across the few feet of space between them, gaze darting across his face quickly. “Las Vegas?” He finally asks, voice sounding smaller than Shane ever thinks he’s heard it. “What are you talking about, Las Vegas?”
God. Fuck. That’s infinitely worse, that Shane has carried this hurt for all these years and Rozanov - he doesn’t even fucking remember.

It's why he strongly doubted she would want to go through the whole ordeal with the moths again, even now that she knows they wouldn't harm her. Something Darlington couldn't guarantee for most other kinds of magic, and now - for himself.
She wouldn't just take the moths herself and put the tattoos back on, would she? So how did it happen?
Even his dull demon brain could manage the simplicity of those spell requirements. Only human saliva reverses the magic. The realization sort of makes him short-circuit.
"I'm feeling a little under the weather. Call me for dinner?", he starts climbing the stairs to the Virgil bedroom.
Or: It's only been a couple of days since the second descent into hell, and Darlington seems to be coming down with something. He also sees Alex's tattoos for the first time since he erased them on the day they met. It forces him to confront a very ugly part of himself.

He pulls up Jane in his phone again. He presses call.

Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. While Ilya is typing, Hunter has been staring at his phone as his eyebrows slowly move closer and closer together. Ilya is tempted to make a joke about Hunter getting wrinkles.
“Does your phone work?” Hunter says, looking up from his own phone. For a brief, panicked moment, Ilya is worried, but then, the three dots of Shane typing, and then Shane has responded: Are you joking??
Ilya types back quickly: No. Elevator stopped. They say 20 minutes.

“-can’t see each other again,” Ilya says, looking only at Shane’s hand, holding it so, so gently and stroking over Shane’s skin so, so softly. The soothing feeling of it makes it very hard to focus, but Shane tries very hard to do it anyway. “I tried-we tried, but this can’t happen again.” It takes a moment, but Shane finally manages to make sense of the words, and he lets out a soft noise of understanding.
Ah. He’s apologizing that he won’t be able to see Shane in the hospital again before he leaves.
“I understand,” he says, and he does. It was probably really hard for Ilya to get here even once, and it can’t be very long before his plane leaves. He’s sad, of course–they didn’t even get to spend time together, really–but it’s not like this will be the last chance they ever have to see each other. He gives Ilya his best attempt at a smile, and if it comes out a little sad, too, all Ilya does is reach out to stroke the backs of his fingers gently over his cheek.
