“Tell me—what did you learn from this experience?”
Blood wells up beneath Tokushirou’s fingernails. For a moment he imagines plucking the appendage like a thick, fleshy leaf from a flower. Tokishige quavers, “I cannot eat the chickens until my master makes use of them.”
The ache eases at Tokushirou’s temples. He cups Tokishige’s face in his hands. Thumbs stroking the ridges of Usami’s soft cheekbones, he replies, “My, but you do know what I need to hear, don’t you? How hard it is to stay mad at you.”
Poppies bloom on Tokishige’s cheeks, delicate petals stretching down to the corners of his mouth to cast his moles in their shade. How naked is his ache to be hurt, Tokushirou thinks, in a way that not even death could satiate. And Tokushirou does worry about that. About needing to choose between him and the rest of the henhouse.
