A continuation after Saccharine, told in Vox’s perspective: Vox wants Valentino’s forgiveness more than anything, and doesn’t want to waste any opportunity to earn it. Not when everything that matters is finally his. And Val is just that – everything. But it all feels so fragile. Val’s forgiveness, the Vees, Val himself – everything feels like it’s made from paper. If he holds on too tight, it will crumble up in his hands. If he loosens his grip, he risks it all being ripped away. And that ends up becoming all too true when someone from the past returns, seeking to take everything away from Vox.

"My husband?" Lucifer asks hopefully, not really thinking through the ramifications of being wrong. He's never been great at filtering his thoughts before they spill out of his mouth.
A faint blush tinges the other demon's cheeks as his brows furrow. He seems frozen, but there's still a smile, so Lucifer must have come to the right conclusion!

Lucifer wasn’t really accustomed to being physically trapped in one place. He was trapped in hell sure but that was quite large. Trapped in the castle— slightly smaller but he had the freedom to move and really he could leave at any time, he just didn’t want to. But this machine? This box? It was very spherical, could it be counted as a box? Whatever it was, Lucifer didn’t like it.
He really didn’t like how his arms were starting to become numb either.

He can’t expect cockroaches to understand the vision of a god, but, he’ll show them. The Vees, he belatedly amends, will show them.
Once he’s got his body back, he’ll be fucking shit up again like none of this ever happened.

Despite the flaws and grits underneath, they always present a shiny finish. Harmonized and unstoppable. It’s only within the private walls of their home when they allow themselves to be anything else.
This image, as Val has been told, is what gives them their power. It’s about the trust and fear they’ve built within Hell's ever changing community. It’s what allows them to be on top. There is no room for anything less than perfect.
What would happen when Val isn’t perfect anymore?

Val and Vox have been together now, on and off, for forty years, and Vox is tired of it. Not tired of loving Val, not tired of the sex, or the conversations, but tired of how much Val hates himself. He can’t take it anymore, and he decides that it’s best to just end it. He can’t keep watching the one he loves like this. And with the addition of an old flame cropping up, moving on seems a tiny bit easier to do.
They’ve broken up before, but not like this, Vox means it this time, and Val is devastated. He loves Vox, he has for the last forty years. Now he has to pick himself up and try to continue being the overlord everyone knows him to be, but that’s harder than it sounds. It’s hard to be confident when going to work makes you see the one you love, and can no longer have. He’s not strong enough for this, because just seeing Vox breaks his heart all over again.

There’s a soft, throaty chuckle as Valentino waves the smoke from his face to take a slow sip of his drink, closing his eyes briefly in pleasure before cracking one open to look at Alastor smugly. “Mm, and you also know that he wants to fuck you, don’t you, baby?” Discomfort crawls down Alastor’s spine, something ugly and hard settling in the pit of his stomach. “That cutesy, flirty shit you were pulling in front of the whole city—even your tits were falling out, which, nice touch by the way—yeah, you know him.”
Alastor has a plan. Then again, so does Valentino.
