She sighs, but she doesn't move. It's an awful, plaintive noise, tugs your heartstrings to hear it. “Damaged goods,” she murmurs, under her breath.
“No,” you say, again, less of a word and more of a punch to your gut. “Sweetheart, you're not- you're not damaged goods, you're seventeen.” Fucking hell, you're the worst person to be dealing with this, you have no idea how to help. What to say.
(After Peeta dies in the games, the Capitol gives Katniss the Finnick treatment. The only person she has left to turn to is Haymitch. He's not ready to deal with this.)

Tatterdemalion raises an eyebrow at you, concerned. “Alright, Captain?” he asks, in response to the terrible nothing that he has just seen not befall you. He does not ask any further questions. Maybe he is familiar with such absences. Maybe he knows better than to ask. You somewhat hope it is the latter.
“Delightful,” you say, with no pained grit to your voice, because nothing has happened to cause you pain. “Give me- Give me a second. Please.”
