Summary
Chimney didn’t think he’d ever get used to calling it ‘his office’, even though it had been a few months already since he’d stepped into the impossibly large captain’s shoes.
As he passed by the plaque fixed on the wall just outside the office door, he reached up and touched the cold metal right next to where the name was etched and bowed his head in a nod of respect to his predecessor, as he had at the start of every shift since it had been screwed into place. He wondered, if he kept doing this every day, how long it would take that spot to begin to change colour. And whether it would take equally as long for these feelings to fade. Or would it remain this way for the decades it would take to wear it down the metal to reveal the wooden mount underneath.Or
During a freakishly quiet shift, the 118 are forced to face each other and their own personal demons that threaten to tear the fire family apart in the aftermath of the loss of their beloved captain Bobby Nash.

Summary
With a deep sigh Eddie pushed open the car door and made his way towards the darkening house. But almost as soon as he’d clicked the front door shut behind him and tossed his keys into the bowl on the side table where they lived, alongside the dead batteries and elastic bands, a smell of fresh baking wafting through the house hit his nostrils that could only mean one thing.
In the kitchen he found Buck, brow furrowed, looking very confused “Diaz, did you re-organise this kitchen without telling me?”
The ghost of a smile spread across Eddie’s face as he walked to the fridge, grabbed a beer and sank into the nearest kitchen chair.OR
After Captain Nash died and Chimney took charge of the 118, Eddie was just starting to settle into the new normal. That is until Chris finally leaves home for college.
Eddie feels lost and alone without his son, but his best friend is there when he needs him the most, after all they’d promised to always have each others backs. -

Summary
Buck stared down at the tiled floor, letting the hot water run into his eyes and off the end of his nose, watching the mud, blood and oil trace their winding path down his legs, across his feet and swirl away as he’d done hundreds of times before. Usually, this process was enough to shake off any lingering feelings about a call, but this time it felt different.
He’d had to put both hands out just to steady himself. The cold of the tiles keeping him in the present and stopping him from wanting to join the detritus and disappear down the drain.
What exactly was it he was feeling? Why had this one hit him so hard? After all he hadn’t seen or heard from them in nearly 4 years.OR
A tragic call changes everything for Buck when a decision from his past has unexpected consequences.

Summary
"What are you saying, Eddie?" Buck asks again, soft and patient, and it's so unlike him that Eddie melts into his chair.
"Yeah," Eddie chuckles. "What am I saying?"
"Y-you want to try with me? Figuring out…"
"If we could want the same form of physical intimacy from each other," Eddie finishes for him with a nod, a little more confident now.
"H-how?"
"Uh, I don't know yet," Eddie admits. "Slowly, I suppose. I thought we could, you know, come up with a plan together?"
"A plan," Buck echoes, but he doesn't sound weirded out, more like he's already planning to buy a clipboard. "And it wouldn't be strange? I mean, considering— I'm a man, Eddie."
OR After the attack in the hospital, Eddie finds a letter hidden inside a book that Buck gave him, and reading it unravels him irreparably.

Summary
He laid back down, staring up at the ceiling again. When he couldn’t fall asleep, he usually tried some 4-7-8 counting method that he learned ages ago. It often did the trick in a matter of minutes, 15 at most.
This was not one of those nights.
No matter what he did, how much he tossed and turned, he couldn’t stop his brain from thinking and overanalyzing.
What did they mean by that? ‘Just made sense,’ we don’t do everything together, we’re not—
Eddie shot up mid-thought.
“Oh. Oh god,” he said to no one....
