He watched the individual shapes and colors of his girls move in front of him, and listened to their voices float up to his ears, without really making out what they were saying. He thought he could stay like this forever, he wished he could. He felt a familiar pang of anxiety in his chest, anticipation of punishment for feeling happy and at ease. But then nothing happened, and the feeling passed."
The parasitic Silverwood tree has since been removed from Qifrey’s body, and he realizes just how comforting sleep can actually be, if he allows it.

“We wouldn’t have to tell the girls, and it wouldn’t be all the time. We could limit it to this room, just as needed. Just… for us.” Olruggio meets his eye, letting the fire in his eyes melt into bashful tenderness. Qifrey sighs, taking a long pause to think.
“Not very watchful of you, hm?” Qifrey responds after a moment. Olruggio raises an eyebrow.
“Oh please,” Olly scoffs, gesturing to their home. “We’ve been grading each other’s homework for years. You know where my morals stand. I’m plenty watchful where it counts.”

After the events of Silver Eve, Qifrey makes the difficult decision to tell Olruggio and the girls his secret. His apprentices come up with many ways to keep him on edge and alert. Olruggio, too- although using slightly less… conventional methods.

Summary
His fright at the thought that Coco might have been in danger when he woke up was heart-stopping. The feeling he had when he thought he’d forgotten one of the simplest spells in his collection was….something else. Like a vice around his throat. A garotte of terror.
Olruggio can't claim to be the picture of perfect health and wellbeing, but things are getting strange. He's forgetting stuff - stuff that he really shouldn't be forgetting. And he doesn't know why.

“Look at me,” Olruggio says. He puts a hand to Qifrey’s cheek. The eye shudders and drags, but it finds his gaze. Olruggio beams. His mouth is trembling. “This is important,” he stresses. “I think I know how to save you, Qifrey. I just need to know if you can see me.”
Another slow and sluggish blink, and then a motion so small it could barely be called a nod. Barely was enough. “I can,” Qifrey murmurs. “For now.”
“Good.” Olruggio’s voice cracks. He keeps his smile, even as his eyes sting. “Keep looking at me. Don’t turn away for even a second. I think I know how to take this peace from you for a long, long time.”
