When Jack finally proposed, Joke was both expecting it and taken completely by surprise. They had been wearing their exchanged rings for quite a while, but Joke could tell Jack had been dying to ask him. He was always playing with the ring on Joke’s finger when his hand was in holding distance. The words had been on the tip of his tongue for months, but Joke thought he’d been waiting for the right moment. So when Joke walked into their bedroom to tell him dinner was ready and Jack immediately bent down on one knee, Joke wasn’t sure whether he wanted to laugh or cry. He ended up doing both, but still. But then, just as quick as it had come, the phantom lips disappeared, becoming again what they actually were: nothing more than a figment of his—or, well, someone else’s—imagination.
