It was ironic because thanks to a quartet of time travelers he had discovered that he was originally slated to be the sacrificial love interest. On top of that, once you run into time travelers you automatically lose the protagonist contest.
(Sakura would be very happy being less protagonist-like. Unfortunately, the downside of having a friend with the unshakeable belief that you're unrecognized badass is the expectation that you do badass things with them. Side effects may include time travel, learning secrets you really didn't want to know and participating in technically treasonous activities.)
