They didn't try to see him today. He gets a break, so maybe he won't get tired of them yet, and maybe his patience for them will last a little longer. It hurt, but the idea of him being disappointed to see them hurt worse. They could be patient, for him, they thought.
But then Error attacked, and Ink tried to handle it alone, because Dream shouldn't have to, and now their arms are torn off and smeared through the snow, and their paints are missing somewhere too far to reach, and all they can do is scream for help that's never coming.
"Dream," they scream, as loud as they can. "Please, please I'm sorry I need you--"

Summary
Sharing a body and a soul also means sharing a mind; sharing a mind means no privacy, no boundaries, nowhere to escape even if you need time to yourself, means memories and emotions spilling over and no way to control it.
This by itself is a situation that's very much beyond a couple of fucked-up ten-year-olds' capacity to navigate in any sort of healthy manner, let alone while they're both trying to serve in the role of plucky rpg hero, so it's very lucky for them that they've got a kind player to help steer them.

Summary
A Tale of Stars And Time is a crossover AU/AT that combines both Undertale and In Stars and Time. Originally inspired by a few memes/fanworks of Siffrin in Undertale, this concept does exactly that – take the characters from ISAT, shove them into Undertale and see whatever the heck happens next.
The general plotline involves Siffrin going through their usual time looping shenanigans in their own world when, mysteriously, a strange grey door appears in a hallway that definitely wasn’t always there. Upon closer inspection, Siffrin and co. are suddenly thrust into the very beginning of the Underground. They are soon met by Frisk, a strange child with more to them than meets the eye. Now, the six of them will journey through the Underground, meeting familiar friends and dangerous foes, with plenty of surprises along the way.

Ink is forgetful, sure, but he remembers basic, necessary things, most of the time. So when Error finds him clueless, unable to remember how he got there or any of the people he interacted with, it's nothing short of a good opportunity. Ink knows where the Omega Timeline is, so Error can just go there and destroy it, right...?
Turns out, Ink's memory is still limited at best, which leads him and Error on a hunt for more clues about Ink's previous life in the Omega Timeline, revealing a side of Ink Error never knew about.
...All he needs is for Ink to never remember who they were to each other.

“… you’re not,” he replied, after pausing for only a second. “there’s no supposed-to with you. you were in the anti-void, not an au. you nearly died, but i fixed you.” His voice was quieter than before, and his head was slightly tilted, like a curious dog. “i don’t normally bother to do that.”
“then why did you?” The words hurt in your mouth instead of your throat. It felt like carbonation below your tongue, and it took concentration to keep that static from leaking into your words. You weren’t used to talking. But this was important.
“why’d i fix you?” The skeleton paused, expression going blank for half a second, gaze flitting down to his scarf. “oh!”
The corners of his mouth tugged up again. “because i want a little brother of my own, of course!”

You used to be human, before what you called the Blank. You were a teenager, and you liked dogs and the sun and couldn’t remember much more than that. Then you were made into something else.

That and the long skirt he’s wearing are the only semblance of the Princess who was supposed to be in his place.

"You-- you could make me feel worse," Ink gasps, barely able to speak through their panicked sobs.
Still, they look directly into Nightmare's eyelight, attempting to promise him something worthwhile.
"Dark blue for sadness," Ink tells him, "and purple for fear. It-- it would hurt, and you could do whatever you wanted with that."It's obvious that they're just trying to get out of this. But he knows what those colors do to Ink. They're not lying.
Dream will interrupt them soon, anyway... Would it be more enjoyable than watching them bleed out?
Nightmare takes the purple vial from its place. Ink's eyelights shine with hope as he opens the cap.He tilts the vial and starts to pour the liquid onto the ground.
"NO--" Ink screams, their voice raw and broken. The scream turns to a gurgle as paint gushes from their mouth.
Only a few droplets fall from the vial.
Nightmare feels something at the sight. He holds on to the vial tightly in his hand.-
(Nightmare captures Ink and decides to torture them. Surely, it will be fun to break Dream's annoying, soulless little pet.

Summary
Ink isn't a real person. They can't love people-- only characters. They only need to love characters to protect the multiverse. That's their purpose, they don't need anything else. They weren't made to have friends.
Dream is the Guardian of Positivity. He can't feel negative emotions-- making him a perfect, tireless Guardian. He doesn't need rest, he doesn't need friendship or comfort. Helping the people of the multiverse makes them happy, which makes Dream happy. He doesn't need anything else, either.
At least, this is what they both believed, until Ink teleported to their shared base, and found Dream curled up on the floor of a rarely-used bedroom, uncontrollably sobbing.

Summary
A great source of despair draws Nightmare to an abandoned AU. There he finds an unfinished Sans with no name, no companions, no purpose, no world, and a soul. Nightmare gives him the option to get out of his abandoned, empty world. He accepts the offer but refuses to destroy anything or hurt people. Instead he finds another purpose. In return the Bad Sanses give him a home, companions, a life, and a name. They call him Ink.
Or: Before he can destroy his soul and enter the Doodle Sphere, Ink is recruited by Nightmare. He accepts his role as best he can, even if he sometimes feels like he is meant for something more.
