Summary
Times sure have changed, Mav finds himself thinking as he watches his gorgeous husband stride across the stage to stand at the podium as he's introduced. A decade ago, this would have been a daydream. Two decades ago, a cruel joke to dangle in front of them, nearly criminal to consider. He never thought they'd manage to get here, to have this.
To be married, openly, and not have that blow up their careers. To be married, out to the public, and still get to see Ice climb for the stars - and now beyond them. To see Ice achieve the culmination of a lifetime's worth of ambition, beyond the Navy, as the new SECDEF.

Summary
It was just supposed to be a scouting run. A late night stealth flight, pairs of two mapping out the edge of their patrol sectors and searching for new enemy installations.
Of course, Maverick should have known better. They'd had a few successful nights so far, and that could only continue for so long.
He'd been paired with Ice again, and he'd rather die than admit it, but it's not so bad, actually. The Iceman can be fun, sometimes. Rarely. He's even got a sense of humor.
And, more importantly, he can actually keep up with Mav.

Summary
"He's the fastest man alive," Hondo had breathed, awed, as they all watched the test progress. As they watched Maverick reach high hypersonic.
The map is unreal to watch, seeing that little icon speed straight over colorado, curving over half the state before he turns back northwest. It feels like it can't be real, except they have twelve different camera angles all corroborating the data on the other screen.
And then Maverick hit Mach 10, and despite the celebrating happening around him, he had a feeling-
The beep as the counter ticks up to 10.1 is damning.

Summary
Every time he wakes up, he's certain he's about to find out it was all just a dream. That he'll open his eyes and be back in his stateroom, having never applied for emergency leave, because they never actually found him. That he's gotten so desperate that he's fully dreamed up a reality where they rescued Mav, where they brought him home.

Summary
Mav has been waiting for this day for weeks. Ever since he started teaching regular TOPGUN cohorts again, he's been planning it. He never forgot how they'd all reacted that one day in their own year, when Jester had been circling them in the sky, and then he'd heard, over the radio, 'Holy shit, it's Viper!'
The adrenaline rush had been like nothing else, and though he'd lost that hop, he'd learned an important lesson, too.
It occurred to him one night, while he was having dinner with Ice on the back patio, that he could do that too. That he could get Ice to show up as his wingman and scare this everliving shit out of the entire class. And because Ice is the best (and because he knows Ice, knows of his penchant for mischief), it takes barely any effort to convince him.

Summary
Ice hates waiting rooms. The lingering smell of antiseptic and the stink of anxiety make him nauseous if he takes too deep a breath.
It's worse when they won't tell him anything. "You aren't family," the nurse had said, not unkindly, but firmly all the same. It makes him want to rip his hair out, but this isn't a military hospital, and he can't pull rank or the 'he's my wingman' excuse. Not that it would be an excuse, but it's the closest to the truth that he can publicly get.
So all he can do is sit here and wait for Carole to arrive, hoping all the while that Pete is resting and not laying awake, alone in a hospital bed.

Summary
In the end, it was Hollywood that first brought the idea up. That maybe they should retire, go fly commercial. Not because he was tired of flying fighter jets, nor because he was afraid of combat. It was for the simple reason that he was tired of hiding. Tired of being afraid that they were going to get dishonorably discharged, sent to prison for the crime of love.
And, maybe more than the fear, he was tired of giving his life to an institution that would throw them aside in an instant if the truth of them came out.
Wolf hadn't disagreed, and while he'd miss going supersonic, if they went commercial then it meant that he could fly, too.

Summary
Mav knows he's well and truly fucked when the ocean starts reminding him of Ice's eyes, instead of it being the other way around. When he looks out over the edge of the flightdeck on a gray day and thinks of Ice. It's the death knell of his ability to be in denial any longer, at least.
It isn't like the distance has helped, either. He's out on the middle of the ocean and Ice is stationed ashore.
Hell, if anything, it's probably made it worse. Instead of shooting the shit with Ice in the mess at dinner, or on the radio during a hop, he just spends the nights laying in his bunk staring at the ceiling and thinking of him.

Summary
This mission has gone tits up in such spectacular fucking fashion that, at this point, Soap is more surprised that they haven't been betrayed.
What the enemy does have, though, lack of betrayal or no, is signal jammers. Soap lost contact with his overwatch the moment he infiltrated the compound on the backside, opposite the rest of their forces. They were meant to be the distraction while he worked his way in and set up an explosive exit. If they couldn't make progress toward the target, he was meant to become the distraction and pull heat off of the rest of them.
It should have been fine. Soap was more than capable of handling an infiltration alone, and with Ghost on overwatch, it would've been a walk in the park.
So of course right as he was saying something to that effect to Ghost on comms, everything went to shit.
Behind enemy lines, alone, in the pouring goddamn rain. This isn't a first, though he'd almost rather be back in Las Almas - at least there he wasn't alone. At least there he had Ghost in his ear. He hadn't realized how much he'd come to rely on the comfort of that dry, gravel voice until it was gone.

Summary
It was one thing to know monsters existed. It was another thing entirely to grow up as part of the MacTavish clan, one of the oldest werewolf clans that existed. Being a MacTavish came with ‘capital E’ Expectations. They saw it as their duty to protect humanity from the things it couldn’t protect itself from. Things like vampires.
There was only one future for all MacTavish children - to be turned on their seventeenth birthday and join the clan in full, as werewolves themselves, to carry on that duty.
Or, there was supposed to be only one future for them. John had never been all that good at following rules, though. And while he wanted, desperately, to help people, he wanted to do it under his own power. To earn it, through more than just the happenstance of being born to a family of more-than-human creatures. So he did the only thing he could think to do.
He ran away.
-
Soap achieves the unthinkable - he gets recruited into the elite Task Force 141: a squad that had, until now, been composed of monsters only. Fate and destiny won't let go of him that easily, though. When a mission goes bad, he has to contend with everything he ran away from to protect his team.
