So typical. So fucking typical, that Lance is the youngest and worst of his siblings, and then the kids come along and he isn't even the cutest anymore, and he only made fighter pilot because perfect fucking Keith dropped out and even when he piloted a lion he didn't have a thing like the others, and now he can't even have Blue. Maybe he was the one to suggest it, but he was barrelling towards this point all along; rock fucking bottom.
When it becomes clear that Allura is a better pilot than him, Lance steps down as the Blue Paladin. It is, after all, the obvious decision. Lance is, and has always been, the afterthought.
But who needs an afterthought?

"Why are you here, Nightwing?" Superman's voice was calm but firm as he spoke. He didn't even turn around, all his attention on the man lying on the bed, gripping his hand. He touched him as if he were the most precious thing in the world. Dick didn't want to look: Bruce shouldn't be like this, immobile, surrounded by machinery.
"I'm here for him," Dick said, standing in front of the bed, still looking at Superman, because he couldn't see his father Bruce in that way.
Superman made a contemptuous noise, completely out of place for him, "And obviously, you're alone. Where are the others? Minding their own business?"
Dick curled his lip, defensive. "Someone had to stay in Gotham, you know."
"If my father had been saved from a cult that wanted to sacrifice him to an alien god, I'd be right there with him," the alien said angrily. "But apparently, he doesn't even deserve that grace, does he?"
(Batman was a legend. Batman was invincible. But Bruce Wayne was just a man, and Dick wasn't ready to face the chance of seeing another parent die, without being able to tell him he didn't hate him.)

At first, Bruce was almost too delirious with pleasure to recognize the pain.
Diana was still leaning over him, her strong body rocking perfectly against him. Clark was responding enthusiastically to her kiss, finger fumbling with the buttons of his shirt in a rush to get it off. Bruce was overwhelmed by all of it, so much so that he only just now started to recognize the unpleasant sensation.
In the flurry and haze of all the mindless pleasure, kissing, and grinding, someone had (accidentally) broken his arm.

He's filled with happiness and awe and love each time one of his kids takes him into their confidence and leaves the closet. And every time, Bruce makes a point to embrace them, say those three important words, and assure them he would never change anything about them.
But- that's not quite true.
Bruce does wish they'd stop assuming he's straight.

“Bruce,” Dick said, staring into his eyes. They were both piercing and so very far away, as though he saw Dick but also could see something through him. Something far in the distance. “Bruce, let’s go home. Let’s go talk to Alfie. Okay?”
Bruce broke the eye contact to look down at the grave beneath their feet and Dick’s heart sank.
There was a moment of silence as Bruce rested a hand in the dirt, almost reverently. Dick felt sick.
“I can’t, chum.”
He couldn’t.

/|\Or, in which Bruce time travels to a time after Jason has died but before he’s crawled out of his grave. In his messed up state from the time travel he ends up guarding Jason’s grave obsessively to wait for his son to come back. This time he’ll protect him. He won’t fail again.
Meanwhile, his family misunderstands. And worries. Mostly they worry.
