Where – when – Satin had come from, that had been the woman’s place and it would be a shame on any man who dared to step into it. Here, it was simply not so. Here, now, you did what you were best at. A woman could be a warrior, a spearwife, and a man could be a hearth husband and keep the home for his partner, if that was his strength. It was simply accepted, allowed, normal. It was the role Satin had fallen into when he had fallen through time and found himself here. The jarl’s... he did not want to say hearth husband. Tent keeper? Helper? Back in his time, he might have called it ‘steward’. But he would not say he was Jon’s hearth husband. That term was so... official. So formal. So romantic. Sure, Satin kept his tent and his hearth. Sure, Satin prepared their food and drink. And, sure, Satin warmed his furs. But they were not lovers. Jon had never had him, though not for Satin’s lack of offer.
