Mattie felt a faint breeze at his ankles. That’s not right, he thought. There’s nowhere for any wind to come from. He shared a glance with Owen. Was he going crazy? A white fog surrounded the two of them. The bottle of Amontillado seemed to shake. In his surprise, Owen dropped the bottle. He flinched as the bottle hit the cold stone floor, expecting to hear the glass shatter on impact. The sound never came. Instead, the bottle rolled away, unharmed, into the murky cloud.

James just nodded good-naturedly, not calling her out on it. “Bit intense, I’ll admit.” He offered a vaguely disingenuous smile and nudged her with an elbow. She smiled back and felt like melted plastic—sticky and artificial.
“But it did what you hoped it would.”
She nodded, feeling like a bobblehead, not trusting herself to speak.

(Ps I mainly chose lawsuit era so that the kids could be closer in age 🤷🏻 if you don't like lawsuit era fics I swear that it's not super relevant past a certain point in the fic. It's very buddie heavy and cute and silly for the most part)
