That is, until he gets a phone call from an old friend that changes everything. Facing not only the challenge of taking care of his teenage nephew but also coming home to where his whole life fell apart, Bilbo is not sure if he’s up to the task. To top it all off, he keeps crossing paths with the infuriatingly handsome, tall berk that seems to be just as concerned about Frodo as everyone else in the small town.

The winters up here are cold and harsh, and there is a strange feeling on the air, thick with the brine of the sea and secrets to which he is not privy; there is some part of the long and troubled history of the place that has not been spoken of, a shadow between the broken family gravestones and the caves beneath the cliffs, dark and dangerous.
Perhaps it is all in Bilbo’s mind, but as the nights grow longer, he starts to doubt it, and as Thorin sinks ever deeper into black and incalculable moods, he will have to find what has been lost, before it takes them all.

No one believed her when young Bilbo, born too soon and too weak to cry, survived his first weeks into the world.
They changed their mind when, at four years of age, Bilbo transmuted his mother’s cutlery into a flute and began to play the elven lullaby Belladonna sang for him every night.
It caused a scandal. For the Baggins side of the family, anyway. The Took side had a good laugh.

Thorin blinked and felt heat rush up beneath his cheeks. Prayed to Mahal that his humble beard might survive the sudden praise. For again, he had always wished that Master Baggins might find him attractive in spite of his less than suitable beard, but here was Master Baggins ever the Unexpected. And here he was dolling out such lovely compliments.
“Not his beard,” Dwalin let out with a mirthful scoff. “It’s not any better than Kíli’s.”
“Oh, nonsense!” Master Baggins furrowed his brow. “You mean to tell me that you dwarves consider it unattractive to groom one’s beard so short?”
