Summary
Scott's been the subject of a lot of rude comments, on and off the ice. One of the things he'd braced himself for. One thing he hadn't expected was to hear that people who made those comments while playing Ottawa tended to get punched by one Ilya Rozanov.

Summary
He can’t tell Ilya though. He can’t tell Ilya that his team might not be right for Shane. That this perfect solution is making Shane a worse hockey player, a bad teammate.
That maybe Shane Hollander of the Voyagers really was his full name. That Shane Hollander of the Centaurs might not exist.
He can’t say that. He can’t ruin everything. He can’t dim the shine in Ilya’s eyes, the bounce in his step, the color in his cheeks he didn’t have the last few years.
Ilya sacrificed hockey for their relationship for two years, played on a crappy team and watched Shane win. It’s Shane’s turn to sacrifice, to figure out how to make this work and let Ilya lead this time.
Or:
Transitions are hard for Shane. Joining his husband's team turns out not to be an exception to that rule.

Summary
The truth was, yeah, Shane married Ilya, but he’d married hockey first. He married hockey the second he signed his rookie contract with the Metros, and his courtship began long, long before. And his marriage to hockey wasn’t like his marriage to Ilya. Hockey wouldn’t ever love him back. Ilya wasn’t going to chew Shane up and spit him out at some nebulous point after he turned thirty and before he turned forty, his joints busted and his mouth full of dentures and his brain fucked to hell and back. And that marriage—his first marriage—had always come before his second, illicit shotgun wedding.
It wasn’t ideal, maybe, but that was just how things were. Hell, it was probably the same for Ilya, too. The fuck was Shane supposed to do about it? Nothing, nothing, nothing. He liked his life just the way it was. He didn’t want to do anything different. He still doesn’t. And that’s the worst, most shameful part of it all: at the end of the day, some part of Shane will always wish he could wind back time like adjusting a watch; erase that Instagram post before it ever hit the internet and go back to the life they’d had before; the life that was slowly killing them both.

Shane doesn’t realise it’s a thing until J.J. sends lmao did you guys see this shit?? into the Metro’s group chat with a link to an article.
It is SO on between Hollywood and Hockey atm, Celebrity Insider says. Gia de Soto, lauded editorial icon, revealed a potential love match with this buzzer beater post on Instagram last week—
Shane’s stomach finds his shoes. Or maybe it’s been there since he read the hyperlink, and he's just now realising. His hands are sweating. He’s being stupid. He hasn’t been thinking about Rozanov.

Summary
“You know, there are a lot of kids that look up to you—“
It’s the refrain of Shane’s life. Everything circles back to this: a lot of kids looking up to you. That’s why you need to spend your summers doing ad campaigns. That’s why you need to let a social media manager handle your every interaction online. That’s why we need to sit here after family dinner with flash cards rehearsing the different ways you’ll answer reporters’ questions after you face Boston next week, and, oh, when we’re done, let’s do some French vocabulary flashcards, too, because it’s important to the Francophone fans that you’re thinking about them. There are lots of Asian Francophones in Quebec, Shane. Almost 13% of primary schoolers are of Asian descent, compared to less than 4% of hockey players. Isn’t that pathetic?
As if Shane doesn’t know that it’s pathetic. As if Shane doesn’t know what he fought through to get here.
Abruptly, Shane is furious.
