Summary
Fear leads to anger—anger leads to hate—hate leads to suffering.
Jayce knows this, has known it since he was a padawan training with Viktor, fantasizing what it would be like to finally become Jedi together. But how can the Jedi Code teach about compassion and love while preaching that their attachment to each other is wrong?
When Viktor left the Temple him to 'protect him' from their sin - loving each other -, Jayce started to question and defy the Masters' teachings in both his thoughts and actions, until he, too, left the Temple behind. But now, Viktor would hate the man he's become, even though there is not a single moment Jayce doesn't miss him.
Jayce has to decide who he is without the Code, without Viktor, without everything he once called home.
This is his descent from the teachings of the Jedi into the very thing he was taught to avoid.

How can he do anything but believe them whole-heartedly when they cup his face and tell him words so amazing and incredible that his heart sings in his ribcage? How can he be expected to not obey the people that raised him from a mere son of a blacksmith to a prophet among the people; someone who saw things no one else saw and was miles ahead of his time? So when there’s a whisper in his ear, as thick and sweet as honey, that he is perfect, and got so far as he has because he was always steadfast and loyal to this idea of perfection, it has to be true - especially considering he worked the entire miserable 32 years of life to hear those delicious words.
It has to be, because he is nothing without that strong, steady ideal of perfection that serves as the foundation to everything he’s created, everything he is, and everything he must be.

In which everything Jayce has left unsaid comes back to bite him.

Below them, the river stretches wide and black, the city glowing like a starry sky of molten gold. The wind sweeps at their clothes and hair—casual, but constant—reminding them that yes, the world is still moving even when time feels like it isn’t. Silence, as the laws of convection dictates, sinks, introducing a chill to the early summer, and the two of them sit in its presence like they’re enjoying the moment, the beauty of it, admiring the overpass like tourists would.
It’s only when Viktor speaks, subdued and his accent peeking through, throat rumbling with something akin to afterthought, that reality whispers that they aren’t quite tourists: “My parents used to come here.”
Jayce cocks his head to the side. “To talk?”
“To fuck.”
