“Ilya,” Shane’s voice breaks, “Fuck I-”
He realizes then and there that he doesn’t have a plan. He doesn’t know what he wants from Ilya. All he knew was that he needed to hear his voice, but he could tell from his tone that Ilya doesn’t want to talk to him right now. Probably never wants to talk to him again, but he picked up the phone, so maybe that means something.
or
Shane runs from Ilya post tuna melt, gets in a fight, and ends up getting what he actually wants.

“I thought that it would help me get over you,” Shane admits, embarrassed. He squeezes his eyes shut and takes a deep breath. “That maybe I could have sex with a girl and realize that I could do it, and then everything would be easier because I could be like you.”
“Like me?” Ilya echoes.
Shane sighs. “Like, also like girls, but I can’t. I’m gay. Just plain old gay.” He sniffles, tears welling in his eyes. “I tried not to be, I really tried not to be. But I just can’t help it.”

Post tuna melt, Shane doesn’t start dating Rose Landry, and the next time they’re in Boston, Hayden convinces him to come to a club with the team to drink away their loss. After a disastrous hook-up with a woman, Shane wanders around Boston in the middle of the night until he finds himself at Ilya’s house, unsure of how he got there.

Ilya didn’t even look at him as he delivered his final words, his voice cold and devoid of any emotion. Shane waited for a few silent seconds before he gave up, realising Ilya wasn’t going to change his mind. He pulled open the door, hovering in the doorway, waiting for words that never came. His feet refused to move, his heart half hoping Ilya would call his name. But there was only silence. And now that the silence was turned on him, he had no right to hate how much it hurt.
This was exactly what he’d done months ago - turned away, shut down, left Ilya sitting there alone, confused... hurt. Back then, Shane had told himself it was easier this way. Cleaner.
Now he knew what it felt like to be the one left behind.

Shane walked away from Ilya after the tuna melt incident.
But what if Shane never turned up at the All Stars Game in Tampa?
What if that moment had never existed?

The bottle was gone before he knew it, leaving him dizzy and sad. He held it upside down and shook it over his mouth, trying to find a few final drops, and sighed heavily. It hadn’t fixed anything. Of course it hadn’t. Fuck. Every time he closed his eyes he saw them, Rose fucking Landry with her hands up Shane’s shirt, like he belonged to her. Ilya supposed he did. And that thought hit like a blow to the head.

“Ilya,” Shane gasped out, like it hurt to form the word. With it came a small smattering of blood on his lip. A few extra hands were working alongside Ilya and Pike, but Ilya would not move. He had to stay, and listen, and be with Shane.
“Yes. Shaneya, I am here. What do you need to tell me?” More and more blood burbled up past Shane’s lips, which couldn’t be a good sign. How could more blood be trying to escape him? There were already two exit points, wasn’t that enough? Now he had to drown in it?
“Tell Ilya I’m sorry… I- I love him… So much. I’m sorry I left. Please. Please, I can’t die without him knowing…” Ilya couldn’t breathe behind the sob that tore out of him. He collapsed inward with the force of it. Shane was below him, begging to live so that he could tell Ilya he loved him. If anyone reacted to the two boys, Ilya didn’t notice. This whole thing could still be being live-streamed to ESPN, and Ilya wouldn’t care.
Or, Shane gets shot on the ice right after the Tuna Melt Gate. Ilya is there to save him.

Two months ago ago Shane Hollander walked out of Ilya Rozanov's house. Turns out he walked out of Ilya's life too because it's been two months of silence. Their text thread is dead, but somehow he's seeing more of Shane than ever before—cozied up to Hollywood's Rose Landry on the front page of every magazine and online gossip blog.
Shane is happy. His life is exactly what is should be. He has an amazing girlfriend. She's sweet and thoughtful and beautiful. Everyone is jealous of him. His hockey, his girl, his life. He's happy. But he'd be a lot happier if tomorrow wasn't the first Boston-Montreal game since that awful weekend two months ago.
It's the day before game day, and both team captains are dreading the moment they will step onto the ice, probably for the first time in their careers. That is until the Raiders' bus hits a patch of ice instead.

Continuation of episode 4/the club scene:
“If I was dancing with you,” Ilya crowds Shane against the wall, hands coming up against the wall caging Shane in. “Would you let me push boring shirt up and run my hands all over you.” He leans in closer, ducking his head to look Shane straight on. He can feel Ilya’s breath on his face, the smell of vodka on his tongue.
Shane’s heart is racing. It’s been so long since he’s been this close to Ilya off the ice. They’ve gone longer, but for some reason it’s felt like an eternity.
“What are you…”
“Would you tip your head back from the feeling of my hands running over your body?” He leans in further till his lips are ghosting over Shane’s ear, sending a shiver down his spine. “Would you let me kiss you? Suck on your neck?”
“Rozanov,” Shane says as a warning that doesn’t carry one ounce of authority because it sounds more like a whimper than anything else.
They shouldn’t be doing this. Shane shouldn’t be doing this. He left Ilya’s house that day for a reason.
Shane has a girlfriend.
They can’t be doing this.
